The Pacific Northwest is serious about its college football. How does one know that?

Well first off, in order to prepare for their game at Arizona State, the No. 5 Oregon Ducks held its practices inside the Moshofsky Center with the thermostat set on high to simulate the extreme heat the team is likely to encounter during Saturday’s game.

If you think that’s extreme, the No. 24 Beavers have gone one step further painting one of its practice fields blue to prepare for Saturday’s showdown in Boise, where they’ll play on the dreaded “Smurf Turf” of Bronco Stadium. A place where the Broncos are 2-0 against the Beavs, blowing them out in 2004 (53-24) and the again in 2006 (42-14), in each case after taking an early 14-0 lead.

But Oregon State is just one of many that have fallen victim to the Broncos and their mysterious blue field, as BSU has won 56 consecutive home games in the regular season since a 41-20 loss to Washington State on Sept. 8, 2001.

To say that OS will be busy little Beavers in this contest is not an understatement, as they will need the engine room firing on all cylinders at once, including the defense, which has allowed 453 total yards in each of their first two games. Something they cannot afford to do against the high-octane Broncos offense that is capable of putting huge numbers up on the scoreboard as they showed rolling up 648 overall yards in their 51-6 victory over Wyoming last Saturday.

Quarterback Kellen Moore led the onslaught with 370 passing yards and two touchdowns. The left-handed junior is 28-1 with 69 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions in his collegiate career, and if this year’s touchdown production is just 60-percent of his 2009 numbers, he will have reached the century mark by the bowl season.

Nevertheless, Oregon State is no creampuff. They may be still breaking in new QB sophomore Ryan Katz, but the Beavers have James Rodgers who leads the nation with 226 all-purpose yards per game, not to mention brother Jaquizz who can inflict his own type of damage on the BSU defense.

The junior running back who ranked 11th in the nation in rushing last year, piled on 132 yards and two touchdowns and added a receiving TD against Louisville after being stuffed by TCU in Week 1.

Boise State needs a strong showing against Oregon State to convince the football world that they belong in the national title hunt. The Broncos have already dominated the Beavs twice, who have already lost once to a top 10 team this season.

The Beavers must not focus too much on Moore and forget about junior rushing threat Doug Martin who leads Boise State’s running game, or Titus Young and Austin Pettis who have combined for 28 touchdown receptions since the start of last season.

The Broncos just have too many weapons for shaky Oregon State defense to contain.
