Baylor Bears vs. Rice Owls Preview

In a non-conference battle of a couple teams from Texas the Rice Owls (1-2) host the Baylor Bears (2-1). College betting lines have Baylor as 7.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 54.

Things started good for Baylor, as they won their first 2 games, but they were killed in their last game losing by 35 points. The Bears are not the laughing stock of the Big 12 any longer with the offense they have led by one of the most exciting QB’s in the nation and they have a legit chance for their first winning season since joining the Big 12 in 1996.

Rice finished 10-3 in 2008, but had a nightmare season last year finishing 2-10. They are not off to a good start this season, but they have played a tough non-conference schedule facing a Big 12 Texas team and then in their 3rd game faced Northwestern of the Big 10.

Baylor has an exciting offense, but little defense and that may not kill them in this game since the Owls only rank 106th in rushing yards per game, but they do rank a decent 57th in passing yards per game and they may need to air it out in order to score the home upset.

In their last games Rice lost to Northwestern 30-13 and Baylor was killed by 4th ranked TCU 45-10.

Heading into this game Rice is 2-1 ATS and Baylor is 1-1 ATS.

Baylor is led by duel threat QB, who had a tough game in the loss to TCU with only 164 passing yards with 1 TD and 21 rushing yards averaging a paltry 1.5 yards per carry. TCU has one of the best defenses in the nation, but luckily Rice does not, as they rank 93rd overall and are especially weak defending the pass.

Last week in their loss to Northwestern Rice gave up 307 passing yards and 144 rushing yards. They have to get to Griffin and not allow him to kill them with his arm or his legs. Griffin can be helped in the game by RB Jay Finley, who played well in the loss to TCU rushing for 56 yards averaging a solid 6.2 yards per carry.

Rice does not have the best pass rush, as they only have 5 sacks in 3 games. However, since their pass defense only ranks 96th in the nation they will have to put some pressure on Griffin or the mobile QB with a solid arm may pick apart the Owls’ secondary.

On offense Rice is led by QB Nick Fanuzzi, who passed for 207 yards and 1 INT in the big loss to Northwestern. Baylor has a decent pass defense ranking 47th in the nation, but they gave up 267 yards through the air against TCU.

Fanuzzi will be playing behind an offensive line that has allowed 7 sacks this season, but the pass rush of Baylor only has 4 sacks in 3 games.

Where Baylor is weak on defense is defending the run, as they rank 87th in the nation giving up an average of 180.33 yards per game and they gave up 291 rushing yards to TCU last week. However, the Owls do not feature a strong rushing attack with RB Sam McGuffie being their main guy and he only has 95 rushing yards this season. McGuffie is a decent pass catching threat out of the backfield and he will have to play well for Rice to win.

Baylor will bounce back after last and Griffin said after the game Griffin said, “I’ve never been more embarrassed in my life.” They will bounce back in this game and Griffin will take advantage of a weak Rice D and have a big game. Rice simply does not have the offense to keep up with Baylor. The Bears will win this game in the Lone Star State and cover the spread going 3-1 on the season before they begin Big 12 play next week.

Trends:

Baylor is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games, 6-0 ATS vs. a team with a losing record, and has an Under record of 7-1 in their last 8 games.
Rice is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games and 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against teams with a winning record.

Pick: Baylor -7 ½

Jason did OK last week going 4-4 for the week in the college game and while he has yet to be below .500 for any of the 3 weeks he wishes the Redskins could have played some D against the Texans in losing their first game of the season to the Lone Star State.
