Hawaii Rainbows vs. Colorado Buffaloes Preview

The Hawaii Rainbows head the mainland this Saturday afternoon to take on the Colorado Buffaloes in their house. Both teams are 1-1 heading into this game.

The Buffaloes offense was less than decent last week only scoring one TD, but  they may come alive in this game against a Hawaii defense that has given up 64 points in their first 2 games.

The Rainbows have the nation’s 2nd ranked passing offense averaging 401 yards per game through the air and they are coming off a solid away win in their last game.

Hawaii was 6-7 last season and they have a good chance to play in a bowl game this season since they only face one team that is currently ranked in the top 25. They have the passing offense and they may have to light up the scoreboard against Colorado since the Rainbows have major issues on defense.

Last week Hawaii beat Army 31-28 and Colorado was embarrassed getting smoked in the Bay Area 52-7 by California.

Hawaii heads into this game 2-0 ATS and Colorado is 1-1 ATS.

Colorado really wants to forget last week’s game against Cal where they only had 239 yards of offense and had 5 turnovers. They have to hold onto the ball against Hawaii, as if they turn the ball over like they did against Cal they will not win this home game.

Buffaloes’ QB Tyler Hansen suffered a minor knee injury in the Cal game, but he is expected to start against Hawaii. Against the Golden Bears last week Hansen was only 18/34 for 166 yards with 0 TD and 3 INT. He will be facing a experienced Hawaii secondary that is decent, but he will have time in the pocket since the Rainbows’ pass rush is weak.

Colorado RB Rodney Stewart had 78 yards in the loss to Cal, but he only averaged 2.7 yards per carry. He will likely have much better numbers in this game, as the Hawaii defense is pretty weak and last week the Rainbows gave up 250 rushing yards to Army.

Pass, pass, pass is what the Hawaii offense is all about and they are led by QB Bryant Moniz, who was 25/36 for 343 yards with 3 TD and 0 INT last week. The Colorado secondary has to cover the solid Hawaii WR’s of Kealoha Pilares and Royce Pollard, who both averaged over 17 yards per catch in the win against Army.

The Hawaii offensive line is very experienced, but is only so-so when it comes to pass protection, which is not good since the Rainbows air it out so often. Luckily they will be facing the pass rush of the Buffaloes, which is not very good and has had major problems getting to the opposing QB this season, especially last week against Cal.

Even though the Buffaloes were smoked last week they were not killed in the air giving up 197 passing yards. The Buffaloes have a good secondary and they will be tested, big time, against the pass happy offense of Hawaii.

Hawaii did have 129 rushing yards in their opening loss to USC and last week had a grand total of 10 rushing yards. They will look to get into a shootout, as if they do not they will lose with their less than stellar defense and their lack of a solid rushing offense.

The Buffaloes are looking to forget about last week and they will do just that with a win over Hawaii at home. The Rainbows will score quite a few points, but the Buffaloes will score more, as the Hawaii D simply cannot stop the run or the pass and that will be shown in this game. However, Hawaii will keep up with Colorado and even though they will lose they will cover the 11-point spread.

Trends:

Hawaii is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games, and they have an Under record in 4-1 in their last 5 road games.
Colorado is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games, 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS loss, and has an Over record of 4-0 in their last 4 home games.

Pick: Hawaii +11
