Texas Longhorns vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders Preview

In a Lone Star State match up in the Big 12 on Saturday night the Texas Tech Red Raiders host the 6th ranked Texas Longhorns. Both teams are 2-0 so far this season and while Tech is 2-0 ATS Texas is 0-2 ATS.

Texas has not played great teams in their first 2 games and the Red Raiders will be their first big test, especially with the offense that Tech has. The Red Raiders can really get a leg up in conference play with a win, as they face Missouri and Oklahoma State at home and do not face Oklahoma until their 3rd to last game of the season.

Texas head coach Mack Brown is only 3-3 in his last 6 games in Lubbock and the Longhorns are only 9-9 there since 1974.

Neither team had a tough time last Saturday, as Texas Tech smoked New Mexico 52-7 and Texas looked great on both sides of the ball in their 34-7 win over Wyoming.

Texas Tech has a great offense that has averaged 334.5 passing yards per game, which is good for 11th in the nation. The offense is led by QB Terry Potts, who blew up against New Mexico with 293 yards with 3 TD and 0 INT. He has a couple of great WR options in Lyle Leong and Detron Lewis, who are each averaging over 13 yards per reception.

The Longhorns’ secondary has not played great and last week they allowed Wyoming to gain just under 200 yards in the air and they will have to play much better this week than they did last week.

To take some pressure off Potts the Red Raiders will have to pick up some yard on the ground, but that will not be easy against a great Texas run defense that has only given up an average of 73 rushing yards in their first 2 games.

Tech’s offensive line is key for them in this game, as they have to keep the solid pass rush of the Longhorns off Potts and allow him to find his targets as well as try to open holes for the run.

In their win over Wyoming the Longhorns used a well-balanced offense with 222 yards through the air and 167 yards on the ground. They are led by QB Garrett Gilbert (22/35 222 yards 1 TD last week), who really spread the wealth around in the Wyoming win throwing to 8 different receivers.

Gilbert has a strong arm, is playing behind a solid offensive line, and has many WR options. To top it all off he will be facing a Texas Tech secondary that has given up 550 yards through the air in their first 2 games. That is not good for the Red Raiders, who have to get to Gilbert, but their pass rush is decent at best.

Foswhitt Whittaker is the main RB for the Longhorns and so far this season he is averaging an impressive 7.1 yards per carry. If he and backup RB Cody Johnson can run well in this game it gives Texas a great chance to win and it will also keep Potts and the solid Tech offensive on the sidelines.

Defense is the weakness of the Red Raiders and they will have to use the crowd to their advantage to get pumped up and keep the Longhorns from making big plays.

Yeah, Texas Tech has the offense, but their defense is simply not very good and Texas will exploit that. They will move the ball at will and even though the Red Raiders will score a bunch of points the Longhorns will score more winning this game and covering the spread.

Texas is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games overall.

Texas Tech is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against teams with a winning record, 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS win.

Texas has an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 conference games and Texas Tech has an Under record of 4-0 in their last 4 Big 12 conference games.

Pick: Texas -3
Pick #2 – I also think the Over is also a good call in this game and in a trend the last 4 games between these teams where Tech is the home team the total has gone Over all 4 times.
