Two of the nation’s most potent running offenses will do battle in Reno under the Friday night lights as the Nevada Wolf Pack hosts the Cal Golden Bears in a non-conference match up.

The Wolf Pack improved to 2-0 for the first time since 1995 after avenging a disappointing loss to Colorado State a year ago by thumping the Rams 51-6 in their 2010 home opener on Saturday.

Nevada rolled up 631 yards of total offense as dual-threat quarterback, Colin Kaepernick accounted for 402 of those yards, with 161 yards on ground while completing 21 of 29 for 241 passing yards.

Meanwhile, Cal moved into the rankings in the coaches college football top 25 poll on Sunday, coming in at No. 24 with a huge 52-7 win over Colorado at home. They have outscored their first two opponents 104-10.

A big part of the recent success has been the Cal defense. The G-Bears sacked Colorado

quarterback Tyler Hansen six times, intercepted him three times and scored twice. You’re going to win games when you get that kind of performance from your defense, plain and simple.

Nevertheless, how will that defense fair against a Nevada squad, who with a win over Cal on Friday, could find themselves breaking into the nation’s top 25 come Sunday morning.

They will definitely have their hands full containing Kaepernick as well his as sidekick in the backfield — running back Vai Taua. The Pack were the first team in FBS history to have three 1,000-yard rushers a season ago, so too predict that status again wouldn’t be a stretch with the likes of Taua and Kaepernick spearheading this year’s offensive attack.

While Kaepernick is mostly known for his running abilities, Cal will not want to get caught creeping up on the 6-foot-6 senior as he does possess a strong arm and capable receiving squad that can move the ball downfield through the air 30 to 50 yards at a pop.

In Contrast, Cal quarterback Kevin Riley who is also known for his running abilities has been inconsistent during his time leading the G-Bears. The senior will have to improve his play with more speed and breakaway ability utilizing a veteran offensive line that can open holes as well as offering sustained protection against the pass rush.

This should work in favor of Cal, as Nevada has to get better at stopping the pass. If Riley can avoid the mental mistakes of a season ago, he could find passing opportunities against an inexperienced Wolf Pack secondary that is s breaking in three new players on this year’s squad.

An important element for the G-Bears if they want to snatch their first road win of the season.

This could be a huge year for Nevada, and when looking at their match up with Cal, it appears that they stack up as the more talented of the two on paper. They definitely have one of the most talented backfields of all the teams in the FBS, and are hungry to improve upon last year’s 8-5 finish. I just don’t think Cal has the defensive weapons to keep up in this one.
