Air Force Falcons vs. Oklahoma Sooners Preview

The Oklahoma Sooners (2-0) may have a tough task this Saturday facing the Air Force Falcons (2-0), who have the top-ranked rushing offense in the nation. In an impressive stat the Falcons are averaging 423 rushing yards per game, which is 91.5 yards more than the 2nd ranked rushing offense.

College football lines have Oklahoma as 17-point favorites in this game.

The Falcons are looking for their first 3-0 start since 2008 and they are coming off an 8-5 season last year.

The Sooners did not look like National Championship contenders when they only beat Utah State by 7 points in Norman in their season opener, but they did look like one in beating, then, 17th ranked Florida State last week in a rout.

Last week Oklahoma looked great on both offense and defense crushing Florida State 47-17 and Air Force beat BYU 35-14.

Heading into this game Oklahoma is 1-1 ATS and Air Force is 1-0 ATS.

Air Force is, pretty much, all about the run and RB’s Asher Clark and Jared Tew lead them. Clark is the main back and he is averaging an impressive 6.8 yards per carry this season. The Sooners’ run defense has had their issues this season, as while they are great at the pass rush their run defense gave up 205 yards against Utah State 2 weeks ago and 123 yards last week to Florida State.

The Sooners will stack to line to defend the run and Air Force QB Tim Jefferson may keep them honest and make it a little easier for the rushing attack if he can connect on a few passes down the field. Jefferson can air it out and for the season he has 247 passing yards and 3 TD.

Oklahoma has the nation’s 15th ranked passing offense averaging 305.5 yards per game through the air and they are led by Heisman candidate QB Landry Jones, who played great against Florida State going 30/40 for 380 yards and 4 TD. WR Ryan Broyles is his main target and the Junior WR has 21 catches for 266 yards and 3 TD averaging almost 13 yards par receptions this season.

The Air Force defense only gave up 88 passing yards last week to BYU, but they did give up 249 to Northwestern State in their season opener. The secondary will have to play great in this game since the front line D of the Falcons is undersized and does not feature much of a pass rush.

Yeah, undersized since the Falcons only have one player on the defensive line that is over 240 pounds. They play a great defensive scheme and will have to run it perfectly in order to keep the Sooners from lighting up the scoreboard.

The secondary of Air Force is pretty good, but last year they had major problems when they played teams that featured solid passing QB’s, which OU has in Landry.

There is another Heisman candidate in the OU backfield in RB DeMarco Murray. He was the awards’ front runner after week 1 rushing for 208 yards against Utah State, but only had 51 yards averaging 3.2 yards per carry against Florida State, but he did score 2 TD.

Murray may have another good game since the Falcons do not have a great run defense. Last week they gave up 221 rushing yards in their win over BYU and the Sooners’ offensive line is big and may manhandle the Air Force front line D and open up big holes for Murray.

Oklahoma may have turned the corner last week and they will dominate this game on both sides of the ball, as they will play great on offense and their defense will keep the Falcons’ rushing offense in check. The Sooners will easily win this game and cover the spread sending the Falcons home with their first loss of the season.

Trends:
Air Force is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win.
Oklahoma is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following an ATS win.
Air Force has an Over record of 6-1 in their last 7 games and Oklahoma has an Under record of 9-4 in their last 13 games against teams with a winning record.

Pick: Oklahoma -17
