Iowa State Cyclones vs. Kansas State Wildcats Preview

On Saturday afternoon in a Big 12 South match up the 2-0 Kansas State Wildcats host the 1-1 Iowa State Cyclones. This is the first conference game for both teams, who both look to get off to a good start in the Big 12.

Kansas State has looked very impressive on offense in their first 2 wins of the season, as they have scored a total of 79 points. The Wildcats have not started the season 3-0 since 2006, which is also the last season they played in a bowl game.

The Wildcats rank 14th in the nation in rushing yards and the Cyclones will have to win this game with their defense, as their offense is not a high scoring one and they are coming off an embarrassing loss to their in-state rival where they only scored a single TD.

This is an important game for Iowa State, as if they lose they will have a hard time making a bowl game for the second season in a row, as after this game they face Northern Iowa next week and then their schedule is brutal. After the Northern Iowa game they face Texas Tech and then in 4 of their next 5 games they face teams that are currently ranked in the top 15 in the nation.

In their last games Iowa State was crushed by Iowa 35-7 while Kansas State beat Missouri State 48-24.

Heading into this game Iowa State is 1-1 ATS and Kansas State is 1-0 ATS.

The Wildcats’ offense is led by their rushing attack, which is averaging 259.5 yards per game and last week against Missouri State had 290 rushing yards. RB Daniel Thomas is the big horse in the backfield and last week he looked great rushing for 137 yards and 2 TD averaging an impressive 6.5 yards per carry. He will be facing a Cyclones run defense that gave up 275 yards on the ground last week to Iowa.

Kansas State QB Carson Coffman also had a good game last week passing for 280 yards with 3 TD. He has a couple of solid receivers and the strength of the Iowa State defense is their secondary. However, the pass rush of the Cyclones is mediocre and Coffman will have time to find his targets if the KSU offensive line can protect him.

Kansas State was only 3/10 on 3rd down conversions against a weak Missouri State team and they will have a much tougher time moving the chains against Iowa State.

Iowa State only picked up 275 yards against Iowa and they have to play better against Kansas State. QB Austen Arnaud only passed for 197 yards and he had 3 INT and only 1 TD. He may have time to find his main targets since the strength of the offensive line is their pass protection.

Cyclones’ RB Alexander Robinson had almost 1,200 rushing yards last season, but only had 48 last week against a great Iowa defense. The Kansas State defense has to contain Robinson, who is also a pass-catching threat out of the backfield.

The defense of Kansas State is a concern, as last week they played division 1A Missouri State and gave up 281 passing yards and 166 rushing yards. The run defense is their main weakness, which is not good facing Robinson, who is one of the better RB’s in the Big 12.

Kansas State is 2-0, but they beat a 0-2 UCLA team in the season opener and a D1A team last week and they will be facing a solid Cyclones team. Iowa State is a legit team that has a good chance to get back to a bowl game even though they play a killer schedule. Iowa State will pull off the upset in this game and Robinson will have a big game and run for a ton of yards.

Trends:
Kansas State is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games, 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Big 12 conference games, and has an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 Big 12 conference games.
Iowa State is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games, 5-2 ATS in their last 7 Big 12 conference games, and has an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 Big 12 conference games.

Pick: Iowa State +4
