The Ohio Bobcats won the MAC East division last year and finished 9-5. The expectations are that they will once again contend for that crown in 2010, but last week’s loss at home to Toledo was not encouraging for Frank Solich’s team. Their work will get much tougher this week as they travel to Columbus to take on the Buckeyes.

The Bobcats offense is led by Boo Jackson at the quarterback spot, but he is being pushed by Iowa State transfer Phil Bates. Jackson is more experienced in the offense, but Bates is a terrific running threat. Don’t be surprised if Bates gets a chance to play a little bit in this game if he is healthy.  Ohio has yet to find any kind of consistent running game, and that will hurt them a lot in this one. Last year they were 11th in the MAC in rushing yards, but still had success. They will have to try to get Jackson running from the quarterback spot to keep Ohio State off guard.

The Bobcats defense is the strength of this team. The defensive unit is led by linebacker Noah Keller. Keller made 155 tackles last year and is one of the most reliable linebackers in the nation. The defense was tied for first in the nation last year with 37 takeaways, so they are a very opportunistic bunch. The safeties are solid and they generally do well at keeping the play in front of them.

Ohio State

The Buckeyes are coming off a big 36-24 win over Miami last Saturday. Jim Tressel’s team had all kinds of trouble in the special teams, but the defense stepped up and played great last weekend. This team still has some question marks, but they are definitely one of the best in the country. College Football

Terrelle Pryor is definitely the most talented player on the Buckeyes offense, but this Ohio State offense is much more than just the Terrelle Pryor show. The running backs are terrific, and the Buckeyes have amazing depth at this spot. Brandon Saine is probably the best pass receiving running back in the country, and he and Boom Herron make a great backfield duo. Pryor is still improving in the passing game, but he is the best running quarterback in the country at this point. When a play breaks down and he scrambles, Pryor has a habit of making numerous tacklers look silly. The offensive line has played much better to start this season than they have in the last couple years, and that is a huge key for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes defense is younger than it has been in the last couple years, but they have already been flexing their muscle. The Buckeyes have allowed just one defensive touchdown so far this year. Cameron Heyward is a likely All-American at the defensive end spot, and Brian Rolle and Ross Homan are very good linebackers. The secondary is a little thinner this week as C.J. Barnett went down with a knee injury. The Buckeyes still have one of the best shutdown corners in the Big Ten in Chekwa. Overall, this defense is very good and they should rank very highly at the end of the year.

The Pick:

I think this is a very dangerous game to wager on because of the complete mismatch and the huge line. Having said that, I do believe that the Bobcats will put forth a solid effort and the Buckeyes may be a little sloppy. This game won’t be close, but 30 points is quite a bit to lay. I think Ohio +30 is the better side to be on.

Ohio vs. Ohio State Score Prediction: Ohio State 35 Ohio 10
