Baylor Bears vs. No. 4 TCU Horned Frogs Preview

In a non-conference match up of a couple of 2-0 teams from the Lone Star State the 4th ranked TCU Horned Frogs host the Baylor Bears. College football lines have TCU as 21.5- point favorites in this game and with good reason, as they are stacked on both sides of the ball and Baylor has major issues on defense.

Baylor is not longer a weak team, as they are led by a very exciting QB under center, but that may not matter against a loaded TCU team that has not lost at home since 2007. However, Baylor is located near Dallas, which is not far from Fort Worth, so they will have many fans at the game and the home field advantage will likely not be as big for the Horned Frogs this Saturday.

Heading into this game TCU is 0-1 ATS and Baylor is 1-0 ATS.

The Horned Frogs have BCS and National Championship hopes, but if they lose to the Bears in this game those hopes are likely dashed.

Both of these teams had no problem in last Saturday’s games, as Baylor killed Buffalo 34-7 and TCU absolutely embarrassed Tennessee Tech 62-7.

I talked about Baylor and their exciting QB and that may be an understatement in Robert Griffin, who leads the Bears and their passing offense, which is ranked 21st in the nation. He can make big plays both in the air and on the ground and in Baylor’s win over Buffalo he was 20/35 for 297 yards with 2 TD and 1 INT and he also rushed for 2 TD.

Griffin has some WR options, but the big key in finding them is the Baylor offensive line, which is not a strong or cohesive unit. They will have to protect Griffin or the athletic QB will really have to use his legs to avoid the solid TCU pass rush. Griffin also has to be smart throwing the ball to avoid interceptions against a very aggressive Horned Frogs’ secondary.

The Baylor rushing attack is led by the duo of Jay Finley and Jarred Salubi and they can really help Griffin out by picking up some rushing yards in this game, but that will be far from easy against the strong run defense of TCU.

TCU’s strength on offense is running the ball with the nation’s 10th ranked rushing attack. QB Andy Dalton, who is great at not making mistakes and letting the running game and defense win the game, leads them on offense. However, he can air it out and for the season has 357 yards and 2 TD.

The big gun for the Horned Frogs on offense is RB Ed Wesley, who has 219 yards and 2 TD this season. Dalton should have time to find his targets and Wesley should have holes to run through, as TCU has a great offensive line that returns 4 starters and last season only allowed 12 sacks and allowed the rushing offense to gain 240 yards per game.

This game is not a good match up for Baylor on defense, as they are not strong at either rushing the passer or defending the run. They really have to stop Wesley from having a huge game because if he does TCU will control the clock and it will keep Griffin on the sidelines.

Baylor’s defense has given up a total of 520 yards and their opponents will not be playing in any BCS bowl games, or any bowl game for that matter, in Sam Houston State and Buffalo.

Griffin and the Baylor offense will likely have to light up the scoreboard for them to win since their defense is not a good unit. That scenario is unlikely, as torching the Horned Frogs on defense is something that is pretty rare. Last season the Horned Frogs only allowed more than 20 points twice and they never allowed more than 28.

TCU also has an advantage, as many of their starters did not play much in last week’s game since they had the game in hand against Tennessee Tech having a 35-0 halftime lead.

Trends

Baylor is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 road games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS win.
TCU is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games, 7-1 ATS in their last 8 home games against teams with a winning road record, and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games.

Griffin is a great QB, but the Baylor offense line is shaky and they have a weak defense. TCU will not let up on the Bears no matter what the score and last season the Horned Frogs won 8 games by at least 25 points. TCU will come out and be great on both sides of the ball and win this game and cover the spread handing Baylor their first loss of the season.

Pick: TCU -21.5
