Michigan

The Wolverines entered 2010 with an enormous amount of pressure to perform. Rich Rodriguez is definitely in the hot seat and the Wolverines likely need to at least finish with a winning record for him to stay past this season.

The Wolverines got things started off right with an impressive victory over Connecticut last weekend. The Wolverines ran the ball down the Huskies throat and dominated the game from start to finish. The 30-10 win surprised many who thought it would be a very close game all the way through. Denard Robinson got the start at quarterback and he showed why Rich Rodriguez loves him. Robinson ran the ball for 197 on 29 carries and completed 19 of his 22 passes. It appears that Robinson is the clear starter, at least for the time being. Michigan lacks a true great running back, but if Robinson keeps running like that it will help the offense in a huge way.

The Michigan defense is definitely expected to be the weak link in 2010 for this team. This unit did a nice job holding the Huskies to just 10 points, and they did so by only allowing Connecticut to convert on 4 of their 15 third down conversion attempts. The Huskies did gain 343 yards, but Michigan did a great job of stopping buckling down once Connecticut entered scoring territory. The key for this team all year long will be stopping the run. Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame came into this season with high expectations after the hiring of Brian Kelly. Kelly has worked his magic at both Central Michigan and Cincinnati, and now the folks in South Bend are expecting the same from him for their team.

Notre Dame’s opening game 23-12 victory over Purdue wasn’t necessarily the most impressive victory ever, but it was a solid start. Purdue is a team that will likely fare better than most realize, so this was a quality win for the Fighting Irish. Dayne Crist did just what Kelly asked him to do in the opener, and that was to manage the game effectively. Crist didn’t turn the ball over at all and led the offense to 358 total yards in the season opener. The Fighting Irish had only two penalties and no turnovers at all, so they played an extremely clean game.

Notre Dame’s defense allowed 322 yards, but they picked off two of Robert Marve’s passes and that was the big difference in their first game. As they enter this second game against a revitalized Michigan team, the Fighting Irish will need to be ready for a steady diet of Denard Robinson running the football. Notre Dame will need to have their linebackers do a great job of staying in position or Robinson could burn them with his feet. If they play as fundamentally sound as they did against Purdue, Michigan will definitely have their work cut out for them.

The Pick:

This is a game that has many unknowns, which makes it a difficult game to pick. I do know that the over is 5-0 in the last 5 meetings in Notre Dame and both teams have a stronger offense than a defense, so I think the over is the play here.

Michigan vs. Notre Dame Score Prediction: Notre Dame 31 Michigan 27
