This Saturday in a non-conference match up the 9th ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers (1-0) face the Idaho Vandals (1-0). College football lines have Nebraska as 28-point favorites, but Idaho is no pushover and is a solid team that won a bowl game last season.

Idaho is not known as a big football school, but they have a great passing offense and last season beat Bowling Green in the Humanitarian Bowl. The Vandals have the offense, but their defense is a big weakness and they may really have to light up the scoreboard in order to pull off the upset against Nebraska.

Nebraska has legit Big 12 title and BCS title hopes this season and last season they were 10-4 and laid a 33-0 beat down against Arizona in the Holiday Bowl. They have an exciting QB and even though they lost stud DL Ndamukong Suh to the NFL they still have a great defense.

Nebraska is one of the 3 teams in the Big 12 that is ranked in the top 10, Texas and Oklahoma are the others, and to make it to the conference championship game the Huskers may have to beat Texas in the middle of the season.

Idaho Vandals vs. No. 9 Nebraska Cornhuskers Preview

In their first games of the season both teams won easily, as Nebraska beat Western Kentucky 49-10 and Idaho beat North Dakota 45-0. The Vandals covered their spread so they are 1-0 ATS while Nebraska did not s they are 0-1 ATS.

Nebraska totally dominated Western Kentucky with 536 total yards and they used a very well balanced attack with 289 yards rushing and 247 passing yards. QB Taylor Martinez, who had a great game in Nebraska’s opening win passing for 136 yards and rushing for 127 yards, leads the Huskers’ offense.

In the game Martinez made history, as he was the first QB ever to start for the Huskers as a freshman and he also became the first QB to rush for over 100 yards since 2003. Martinez also scored 3 TD’s in the game and the Idaho defense will have to contain him to have any chance to win.

Idaho’s D is not their strength and they may be in for a long game if they cannot keep Martinez and RB Rex Burkhead, who averaged 11 yards per carry against Western Kentucky, from picking up big chunks of yards on the ground.

Getting to Martinez and getting in the Nebraska backfield will not be easy for a Vandals’ defense that ranked 114th in the nation in sacks last season and 115th in the in tackles for a loss.

Last season Idaho ranked 9th on offense and against North Dakota in the season opener they had 547 yards. The Vandals are led by solid QB Nate Enderle, who passed for 311 yards and 2 TD in Idaho’s win over North Dakota and he may have had a HUGE day, but he was taken out of the game in the 3rd quarter.

The Idaho offensive line is mediocre, at best, and last season they gave up 25 sacks. To take some pressure off Enderle the RB duo of Princeton McCarty (89 yards 2 TD) and Kama Bailey (50 yards) will have to run the ball well. If they do that they will keep the Nebraska defense from only focusing on stopping the pass. They may be able to have some success at running the ball, as Nebraska gave up 179 rushing yards to Western Kentucky.

The Nebraska LB unit has a couple of blossoming stars in Sean Fisher and Will Compton and if the Idaho offensive line cannot keep these guys out of the backfield they will be in big trouble. It is vital for the O-line to give Enderle time to find his targets.

Nebraska has a decent secondary and while they have great cornerbacks there are issues at the safety position. They will have to have good coverage against the Idaho WR duo of Armauni Johnson and Daniel Hardy, especially if the Huskers’ front line D cannot get to Enderle.

Trends:
The Vandals are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games.
The Huskers are 6-0-1 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games.

Enderle is a solid QB and even though he can air it out with the best in the nation he will be harassed all game by the Huskers’ D. However, he will toss a couple of TD’s and while the Vandals will lose and it may not be that close they will cover the spread.

Pick: Idaho +28.5
