Arkansas
The Razorbacks of Arkansas are a team that I believe could make some serious noise in 2010. Bobby Petrino’s team is loaded with talent on the offensive side of the ball, and the defense looks to be improved from a year ago.
Ryan Mallett is the leader of this offense, and he is a terrific quarterback. Mallett is 6’6 and has all the tools necessary to be a star in the NFL sometime down the road. Last year Mallett threw 30 touchdowns and only seven interceptions, so he also makes very good decisions with the football. This Razorbacks offense has plenty of other weapons all over the field as well. Joe Adams, Greg Childs, and Jarius form a great trio of wide receivers. The offensive line is a unit that knows how to get the job done. Knile Davis and Dennis Johnson are quality running backs that will help the team all year.
The Arkansas defense is definitely not as strong as the offense, but I do believe they will improve quite a bit in 2010. The front seven of this team has the ability to stop the run well, but they’ll also need to get quite a bit of heat on the opposing quarterback, because this secondary is definitely a weak spot. The Razorbacks secondary has been prone to giving up the big play in the passing game, and they will have inexperienced cornerbacks again this year.
Louisiana Monroe
Todd Berry takes over for the Warhawks after his three year stint at Army. Some are confused by this hiring because of his 5-36 record at Army, but the athletic department believed he could take this team to where they want to go in the Sun Belt Conference.
The first major change that Berry made is replacing Trey Revell at the quarterback spot. Kolton Browning will be the starter for the Warhawks, which means there should be a change in the offensive game plan to accommodate the freshman gun slinger. Revell was successful at the quarterback spot, so this isn’t a hugely popular move at this point. The good news is that Monroe has a great tailback in Frank Goodin. Goodin may be the best back in the Sun Belt Conference and he should be the main man in this offense all year.
The defense was strong against the run in 2009, but they have a whole new cast of characters on the front line in 2010. The defensive front is small and inexperienced, which could lead to some pretty big problems for this Warhawks team. The secondary does return a lot of talent, with Darius Prelow making huge strides toward becoming a star at the safety spot.
The Pick:
This game will be played in Little Rock, and the atmosphere should be quite amazing. The Razorbacks clearly have far more talent than the Warhawks, but both teams will be fired up for this game.
