In a non-conference game in the Lone Star State on Saturday night the 5th ranked Texas Longhorns (1-0) of the Big 12 host the Wyoming Cowboys (1-0) of the Mountain West Conference. Both teams won their opening season games and while Texas looked pretty good Wyoming only beat football powerhouse Southern Utah by 8 points.

Texas has National Title aspirations and this is their first home game of the season after starting their season in the road last week for the first time since 1995. While The Longhorns did win their opening game they made quite a few mistakes including dropping a pair of potential INT, mishandling a punt return, missing 2 field goals and they couldn’t get into the end zone on their opening drive even though they got to the Rice 4-yard line.

Last season Wyoming was crushed at home by Texas 41-10, but they did have a good season, at least for them, going 7-6 and upsetting Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl.

The Cowboys will be playing this game with a heavy heart since 19-year-old freshman LB Ruben Narcisse was killed in a car accident on Monday night.

For any chance to score an upset in Austin the Cowboys will have to play great run defense against a Longhorns’ squad that had 4 RB’s rush for over 50 yards in their opening season win over Rice.

Texas beat Rice 34-17 in their first game of the season last week, but they are 0-1 ATS after they came nowhere near covering the big spread. Wyoming is also 0-1 since they were 21-point favorites against Southern Utah, but only won by a score of 28-20.

Wyoming had fewer yards (384 to 355) and more turnovers (2-0) than Southern Utah, but still won the game. The reason? The Cowboys’ passing offense, which  is led by Austyn Carta-Samuels. He threw for 319 yards and had 3 TD in last week’s win. His main target is WR Zach Bolger, who had a huge game last week with 5 receptions for 134 yards and 2 TD’s averaging an amazing 26.8 yards per catch.

Texas has a good pass rush and they will face a Wyoming offensive line that gave up 31 sacks last season. If the O-line cannot protect Carta-Samuels the Cowboys may be in for a long game.

The Longhorns’ defense has a good pass rush and along with the solid secondary they will be tough to score on. Their one main weakness is the run defense, especially facing teams that have a good rushing attack. Luckily for them that is not Wyoming. In the Cowboys win over Southern Utah Wyoming had a grand total of 36 yards on the ground only averaging 1.4 yards per carry. If they do that poorly against Southern Utah how will they pick up yards against Texas? Simple, they won’t.

Texas’ offense had 369 yards against Rice and they used a well-balanced attack with 172 passing yards and 197 rushing yards. QB Garrett Gilbert makes his home debut in the Wyoming game and last week the strong armed sophomore played decent throwing for 172 yards with 0 TD and 0 INT.  Gilbert may have a bigger game against Wyoming, who are very undersized up front and will have major problems getting to him.

The Cowboys will need LB Brian Hendricks, who had 116 tackles with 1.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss last season even though he missed 2 games, to pressure Gilbert and help stop the run. He is the only real star Wyoming has on defense.

The strength of the Wyoming defense is their secondary, which is loaded with experienced players with all 4 starters from last season returning.

Even though the Longhorns did have 4 players rush for over 50 yards against Rice their big gun at RB Tre’ Newton only averaged 3.4 yards per carry. The Wyoming run defense is mediocre, at best, and he may improve upon that average this Saturday.

There is a reason that CFL lines have the Longhorns as such big favorites in this game, as they simply are much better on both sides of the ball. They played a sloppy game last week, but are now at home and they will come out on fire and school Wyoming in this game showing why they are legit BCS bowl game contenders.

Pick: Texas -28.5
