The No. 14 Trojans will host the unranked Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday, September 11th at 10:30 pm EST at the historic Coliseum in Los Angeles CA.

The Jets’ Mark Sanchez threw three touchdown passes in his first game as the Trojans’ true No. 1 quarterback as USC routed the Cavs 52-7 the last time the two teams met at Charlottesville back on August 30, 2008.

But a lot has changed since then for a USC program that has been hit hard with sanctions by the NCAA that includes a postseason ban as well as the departure of heralded head coach Pete Carroll who is now plying his trade with the Seattle Seahawks.

There were a lot of smiles as first-year coach Lane Kiffin watched as second-year starting quarterback Matt Barkley and wide receiver Ronald Johnson posted record nights, connecting on three touchdowns as USC beat Hawaii 49-36 on Thursday night in Kiffin’s debut on the Trojans sideline.

Barkley tossed 257 yards and tied a school record with five TD passes – first since Sanchez in 2008 — while Johnson matched a USC mark with his three TD catches, while also returning a punt 89 yards for another Trojans score.

Junior RB Marc Tyler solidified his role as full time starter finishing with 154 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown in the win.

Despite the offensive onslaught, the USC defense struggled at times allowing the Warriors to hang in the game gaining 588 yards to USC’s 524 while showing some gaping holes.

Those setbacks could come back to haunt them when the square off against RB Keith Payne and the Virginia Cavaliers who ended a four-year losing streak of season openers with a 34-13 victory against Richmond on Saturday night.

Payne ran for 114 yards and four touchdowns, while senior quarterback Marc Verica, who started nine games in 2008, but played sparsely last season, completed 24 of 35 passes for 283 yards and a touchdown as the Cavaliers piled up 488 yards against the Spiders. Not bad for an offense that finished outside of the top 100 in total offense in each of the last four seasons.

Now the UVA offense will try to take advantage a troubling start for a USC defense that was supposed to be one of the team’s strengths heading into the 2010 season, but fell apart in the fourth  quarter against Hawaii, especially a secondary that  gave up 459 yards passing, including touchdown throws of 56, 65 and 30 yards. It could bode well for Verica as he looks to complete his comeback.

Despite USC’s defensive lapses at Hawaii, I look for the offense to carry the Trojans until the defense can get on the same page, which won’t be too long. The Cavs will get their opportunities but itself has a lot of questions on defense, allowing a rank outsiders Richmond to tally up 333 yards including a 70-yard touchdown run and 183 yards through the air. Look for USC to improve to 2-0 covering the spread.
