The Stanford Cardinal will travel to sunny Southern California to take on PAC-10 rivals the UCLA Bruins on Saturday, September 11th at 10:30 pm EST at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

Stanford spoiled the Bruins 2009 conference opener as Toby Gerhart ran for three touchdowns while quarterback Andrew Luck passed for 198 yards in a 24-16 victory the last time these two met back on Oct 3.

But how good will the Cardinal offense be in a post-Toby Gerhart Era?

Stanford didn’t seem to miss a beat as they opened their 2010 campaign scoring six times in their first seven possessions in an overwhelming 52-17 victory over Sacramento State at Stanford Stadium on Saturday.

A stable of Cardinal running backs including Jeremy Stewart, Stepfan Taylor, Tyler Gaffney, Usua Amanam and true freshman Anthony Wilkerson, rushed for 213 yards, while Luck passed for 316 yards and a career-high four touchdowns before giving way to Alex Loukas late in the third quarter.

Don’t just credit the offense, as the Stanford D held the beleaguered Hornets to just 54 rushing yards and 113 through the air. Not bad for a pass defense, especially its secondary, that struggled for most of the 2009 season.

The Cardinal secondary will try to capitalize on last week’s success against Bruins’ sophomore QB Kevin Prince, who despite a slightly torn back muscle, went the distance but showed his inequities competing just 9 of 26 attempts for 120 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions as the Bruins defense faded, giving up two late touchdowns as the Kansas State Wildcats rallied for 31-22 win at Bill Snyder Family Stadium on Saturday.

But it wasn’t all Prince as he fell victim to eight passes dropped passes from his highly-touted receiving corps.

Defensively the Bruins didn’t fare much better surrendering 313 rushing yards, the most they’ve allowed since Week 6 of 2008, when they gave up 323 to Oregon in a 31-24 loss, something they cannot afford to do against Stanford or they will get beat.

The lone standout for UCLA in the loss was Lou Groza Award-winning kicker Kai Forbath, who connected on all three of his field goal attempts—from 44, 42 and 35 yards in the defeat.

Looking forward to this week’s match up, the burning question has to be, who will succeed Toby Gerhart? All five of the Cardinal tailbacks who saw action against the Hornets failed to differentiate himself enough to be declared the starter of a ground assault that will most likely be a major part of the Stanford game plan.

They will now meet up with the Bruins’ Akeem Ayers who is sure test their capabilities on the ground. The playmaking outside linebacker who also lined up at defensive end on occasion against Kansas State, made 11 tackles, including one sack and two fumble recoveries.

Even without running back Toby Gerhart, Stanford will have the edge in this one. If the Bruins’ want to win this one they will have to play better against the run, forcing Luck to win this one on his own. Prince missed last year’s game against Stanford with a broken jaw, so this will be the Cardinal’s first look at him.
