This Saturday the upstart Texas A&M Aggies host the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, who got off to a good start with a win and look to go 2-0 to begin the season for the first time since 2004.

College football lines have the Aggies as 19.5-point favorites in this game mainly because of the offense that A&M has AND because they are home.

Texas A&M plays in the Big 12 so every non-conference game is important for them since they have, perhaps, the toughest stretch run in the country facing current top 10 teams Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas in 3 of their last 4 games of the season. Last season the Aggies finished the season 6-6 and lost to the Georgia Bulldogs in the Independence Bowl.

Tech only went 4-8 this season, but many are picking them to be much better this season with the dynamic offense they have. They have a ton of potential and may be the dark horse in the Western Athletic Conference. The Bulldogs look to get back to a bowl game this season and they have to tools to do it and the Aggies cannot take them for granted even though they are at home.

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs vs. Texas A&M Aggies Preview

Texas A&M looked impressive in their opening game smoking Stephen F. Austin 48-7 and Tech beat Grambling State 20-7. The Aggies are 1-0 ATS covering the spread in the season opener while the Bulldogs are 0-1 ATS not covering the 27-point spread against Grambling State.

The Aggies looked impressive on offense in beating Stephen F. Austin with 539 yards (303 passing yards 236 rushing yards), but their defense, while only giving up 7 points, did give up 235 yards through the air and that is a concern.

A&M senior QB Jerrod Johnson set a slew of Aggies’ records last season and in the opening game of the season looked great going 23/35 for 278 yards and 2 TD and 0 INT. he has no shortage of passing options and he does not have to do it all himself since the Aggies have super sophomore RB Christine Michael (844 yards 10 TD last season). Last week Michael ran for over 100 yards and scored 2 rushing TD.

The Tech defense has a strong LB corps led by Adrien Cole, who last season had 93 tackles with 2 sacks and 4 tackles for loss and was named to the First Team All WAC. Their run defense is a weakness and they will have to contain Michael or the Aggies will simply run the ball all game long.

While the Bulldogs’ secondary has a lot of experience they got torched last season by teams that had a good passing offense. In 2009 in 3 of the last 5 games the secondary gave up over 300 yards passing. Their front line D has to get to Johnson and not allow him to pick apart the secondary.

Tech used a well-balanced attack (196 passing yards 140 rushing yards) to beat Grambling State. Last season they averaged 188 passing yards per game, which ranked 91st in the nation, but this season they have a new offense that has the potential to put up 188 yards per half.

QB Ross Jenkins leads the Bulldogs and while he only passed for 101 yards in the win over Grambling State he was 15/19. He will likely air it out more in this game since the Bulldogs defense will have a hard time containing the offense of Texas A&M.

Even though Tech will be using a pass happy Air Raid offense they really do not have the WR’s to do it yet and they lack a true playmaker. However, the WR’s will get their chance to change that with all the balls that will thrown to them.

The Bulldogs have plans for an exciting offense and the offensive line is key for them and they will need solid pass protection. However, the weakness of the line is their pass protection, which is not good since the strength of the Aggies’ defense is their pass rush.

Well, wait a minute Tech does have a chance of an upset in this game if they can protect their QB. Last season Texas A&M ranked last in the Big 12 in yards, points allowed, and pass defense and next-to-last against the run and in pass efficiency defense. The secondary is full of young talent, but they did not look good last week giving up 235 passing yards to a weak Stephen F. Austin team.

Trends

The Bulldogs are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 games against teams with a winning record.
The Aggies are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 home games

The Aggies have an exciting offense, but their defense is a major concern. While Texas A&M will come out and play well at home and win they will not cover the spread against Tech.

Pick: Louisiana Tech +19.5
