On Saturday afternoon in a big non-conference game for both teams the California Golden Bears (1-0) or the Pac 10 host the Colorado Buffalos (1-0) of the Big 12. Both teams won their opening games of the season and starting the season off 2-0 would be a great start for these teams that are looking to get some respect in the country.

College football lines have California as 9-pojnt favorites and with the offensive they have I am surprised it is not more.

Colorado is trying to forget last season when they went 3-9 and they got off a to a good start this season by beating in-state rival Colorado State last week. Cal and Colorado will get very acquainted in the years to come since the Buffalos will be joining the Pac 10 next season.

The Golden Bears lost their leading rusher in Jahvid Best, but they have their QB back, who will have to lead them this season. Cal has a legit shot to win the Pac 10 this season, but it will not be easy to say the least. Even though USC cannot win the conference the Golden Bears will still have to play 3 teams this season that are currently ranked in the top 25 in the nation.

Colorado Buffalos vs. California Golden Bears Preview

In their opening games of the season Colorado beat Colorado State 24-3 and California crushed UC Davis 52-3. Colorado is 1-0 ATS easily covering the spread against Colorado State and Cal is also 1-0 ATS covering the big spread against UC Davis.

Colorado only had 307 total yards of offense in their win over Colorado St., but they used a well-balanced attack (192 passing yards 115 rushing yards) and they forced CSU into 3 turnovers.

The Buffalos are led by Tyler Hansen, who was decent in their opening game going 17/25 for 192 yards with 2 TD and 1 INT. He has a couple of legit WR targets in Scotty McKnight, who is the Buffalos all time receiving leader, and RB Rodney Stewart coming out of the backfield. Stewart rushed for 67 yards in the Colorado State game and he will be counted on to pick up some yards against Cal’s defense.

The California defense ranked 111th in the nation in pass defense last season and their secondary lost 3 starters. The LB unit and the defensive line are solid and they will have to play well and not allow Hanson time in the pocket or he may shred the Golden Bears’ secondary.

Colorado played a very sloppy game in the CSU win, as they committed 10 penalties for 104 yards and they cannot do that against Cal.

To say that California dominated UC Davis is an understatement, as they had 517 yards to only 81 yards for UC Davis and they were pretty even both running and passing the ball. Senor QB Kevin Riley leads the Golden Bears’ offense and in the UC Davis game he passed for 258 yards and had 3 TD. Obviously they will be facing a better Colorado defense that only gave up 3 points to Colorado State.

Cal rushed for 230 yards against UC Davis and if they can run the ball again they should have no problem winning this game. RB Shane Vereen is now THE guy and when Best went out with an injury last season he had 3 games rushing over 150 yards and he had 122 yards against a solid Utah defense in the Poinsettia Bowl.

The Buffalos’ defense has a lot of potential, but they gave up almost 200 passing yards to CSU and they will have to step up in this game against Riley and a solid Cal aerial attack. They have to especially have good coverage on WR’s Keenan Allen and Marvin Jones, who combined for over 200 receiving yards and 2 TD in the win over UC Davis. Each player averaged at least 16 yards per reception so the Buffalos’ secondary has to keep them from making the big play.

Cal’s offensive line is sketchy and their pass protection is a big issue this season, but luckily the Buffalos defensive weakness is rushing the passer.

Trends:
The Buffalos are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games.
The Golden Bears are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a win.

Cal is simply too talented on offense and even though the Buffalos may be a better team then they were when going 3-9 last season they will not win this game.

Pick: California -9
