Troy Trojans vs. Florida Atlantic Owls Preview

In a Sun Belt Conference battle this Sunday that is very important to the away team Florida Atlantic (4-7) plays host to Troy (6-5). College football odds have Troy as 4.5-point favorites with a total of 55.

In their last games Troy snapped their 2-game losing streak beating Western Kentucky 28-14 and Florida Atlantic lost to Middle Tennessee State 38-14.

Even though Troy lost to the Sun Belt Conference leader Florida International Troy can clinch a share of the conference title if they win this game and Florida International loses to Middle Tennessee St later on Saturday. No matter if they win or lose it looks as if Troy will play in the Godaddy.com Bowl.

Florida Atlantic will not be playing in any bowl this season, but they can go out on a high note by beating rival Troy. They have had an up and down season winning their first game, losing their next 4, winning 3 straight, and then losing their last 2. They have one of the worst rushing offenses in the nation and their pass offense is mediocre at best. They may have to rely on their 57th ranked defense to win this home game.

Troy has a great passing offense and a decent rushing offense, but their defense ranks 96th in the nation. They are lucky that the Owls do not feature a dynamic offense. If Troy can move the chains and not be shut down by the FIU defense then they should easily win this game.

Heading into this Sun Belt match up neither team has won any of their bettors much green this season, as each is 3-8 ATS. The head-to-head betting trends point to the Trojans covering the spread, as they are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against FIU and the favorite is 5-1 ATS in the last 6 games.

Troy and their solid passing attack is led by QB Corey Robinson, who has passed for over 3,000 yards on the season with 21 TD’s and in last week’s win over Western Kentucky he played well passing for 304 yards with 2 TD and 1 INT. The Trojans have a good corps of receivers, especially 5’9” speedster Jerrel Jernigan, who has 70 catches for 736 yards and 10 TD this season. FIU will have their hands full containing Robinson and Jernigan, but luckily for the Owls they are stronger defending the pass (ranking 37th) than the run (ranking 74th).

The Owls really have to worry about Jernigan, as he is not only a legit WR, but also a solid kick and punt returner.

Troy rushed for 187 yards last week and their rushing offense is led by the RB duo of Shawn Southward (492 yards 5 TD) and Chris Anderson (360 yards 3 TD). These guys will be facing a suspect FIU rushing defense and if these guys have a big game on the ground the Owls will be toast.

One key in this game will be turnovers, as Troy has a turnover margin of +5 while FIU is at -6. If the Owls turn the ball over they will be in trouble since they are not a team that can light up a scoreboard.

The Owls scored 38 points in their fist game of the season, but since then they have not been able to score more than 23. They may have to rely on their defense in this game, but their offense will be facing a Troy defense that has not defended the pass or the run well this season.

QB Jeff Van Camp, who has thrown for 2,157 with 16 TD’s and 12 INT’s, leads the FIU offense.  He will likely have to do it all this game since the Owls’ rushing offense is averaging only 96.5 yards per game. In their loss to Middle Tennessee State last week the Owls only rushed for 55 yards. Camp did pass for 201 yards with 2 TD, but he was picked off 3 times.

Even though Troy does not have a good defense they are good at creating turnovers and they have a good offense. Troy will force FIU into a few turnovers and their offense will be too much for the Owls to handle, as the Trojans will easily win this game and cover the 4.5-point spread.

Betting Trends

Troy is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games and FIU is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games.

Pick: Troy -4.5
