Arizona State Sun Devils vs. No. 23 Arizona Wildcats Preview

The annual Duel in the Desert may be a must win game for the away ASU Sun Devils, as they must win to be eligible for a bowl and they also may have to win to save head coach Dennis Erickson’s job. College football lines have Arizona as 6-point favorites in this game with a total of 54.5.

In their last games ASU beat UCLA 55-34 and Arizona lost to Oregon 48-29.

Arizona was flying high a few weeks back, but they have lost 3 games in a row to the better teams in the Pac 10 of Stanford, USC, and Oregon. They will be playing in a bowl this pos-season, but they could really use a win this Thursday night, as 8-4 looks a lot better than 7-5 on a resume and losing 4 in a row is not the best way to head into a big bowl game.

Arizona has won the last 2 Territorial Cups, which is given to the winner in this big rivalry game.

ASU has lost 3 of their last 5 games, but they head into this game with some confidence after dropping 55 points on UCLA in their last game. This game is not a good match up for the Sun Devils on D, as they have the nation’s 98th ranked pass defense and they will be facing the strength of the Wildcats, which is their passing offense.

Heading into this Pac 10 rivalry Arizona State is a solid 7-2-2 ATS on the season and Arizona is 6-5 ATS. Both teams have O/U records of 7-4 on the season. The Sun Devils have been a good betting team when facing the Wildcats on their turf covering the spread 5 times in their last 7 games at Arizona. On top of that the underdog has covered the spread 5 times in the last 6 games between these 2 teams.

Arizona had a 19 to 14 lead over 2nd ranked Oregon in their last game, but only scored 10 more points the rest of the game. QB Nick Foles had a HUGE game last week passing for 448 yards with 3 TD and 1 INT. WR Juron Criner is his big play receiver and ASU will have to keep him from making the big play down the field. Arizona State will have to have solid coverage in this game since their pass rush is mediocre at best. The Sun Devils gave up 321 passing yards to UCLA last week and if Foles has another big game Arizona has a good chance to win this game.

Foles will likely have to do it all on offense since Arizona does not have a great rushing offense and last week against Oregon they only picked up 58 rushing yards. Also, ASU has a solid run defense ranking 17th in the nation.

Arizona’s defense has struggled lately, as in their last 3 games they have given up an average of 38 points per game. Starting QB Steven Threat was injured in the UCLA game and backup Brock Osweiler came in and passed for 380 yards with 4 TD, 2 to WR Aaron Pflugrad. Much like the Wildcats the Sun Devils rely on the pass, as they do not have a great rushing offense. However, Arizona is better defending the pass than the run and if Sun Devils’ RB Cameron Marshall, who had 147 rushing yards last week, plays well again ASU has a legit chance at an upset.

The Wildcats are struggling and ASU has some mojo after last week’s game and are also playing to keep their season alive. The Sun Devils will turn up the heat on offense and will be too much for the Wildcats to handle, as ASU will win this game in an upset and hope there is a bowl game waiting for them.

Betting Trends

Arizona State is 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and 5-1-2 ATS in their last 8 games as an underdog and Arizona is 15-7 ATS in their last 22 home games and 3-11 ATS in their last 14 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10.

Beware of betting the Over, as even though both teams can rack up the points and have a great aerial attack in the last 5 games between these 2 teams the total has gone Under every time.

Pick: Arizona State +6
