The Connecticut Huskies are looking to clinch their first ever BCS bowl berth when they tangle with the South Florida Bulls this upcoming Saturday night at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

Connecticut can clinch a share of the Big East title and the automatic BCS bowl bid with a win this Saturday by virtue of having beat both Pitt (30-28) and West Virginia (16-13 OT) earlier in the season. Last Saturday the Huskies won their fourth straight conference game with a convincing 38-17 win over Cincinnati, coming in as a 1 ½ point home favorite. The total stayed ‘under’ the 56 point line. The win raised their overall record to 7-4 both straight-up and against the spread. UConn is currently 4-2 SU in the Big East.

The Huskies’ defense has stepped things up over this four game winning streak, giving up an average of just 16 points, which is even better than their 26th nationally ranked average of 20.2 points per game. Offensively, UConn’s game plan continues to revolve around a rushing attack that is ranked 27th in the country. RB Jordan Todman is currently the country’s seventh leading rusher with 1,481 yards on 269 carries. He also leads the team with 14 rushing TD’s. NFL Betting

South Florida started the season 3-3, but has turned things around with wins in four of its last five games. The Bulls are coming off a huge 23-20 OT win over in-state rival Miami, out of the ACC. They covered as a 13-point road underdog and the total stayed ‘under’ the 46 ½ point line. The win moved them to 7-4 SU and 5-6 ATS. South Florida is currently 3-3 SU in conference play.

The Bulls defense has also played well most of the season; giving up an average of just 15.5 points over their last eight games. The offense has also picked up the pace; averaging 24.6 points in their last five games. South Florida has relied heavily on the running of both Moise Plancher and Demetris Murray. These two backs have combined for 1,144 yards on 251 carries and have scored eight TD’s.

Trends:

Connecticut is just 1-4 both SU and ATS on the road this season. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of its last five games overall.
South Florida is 4-2 in six home games this year but just 2-4 ATS. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of its last nine games overall.

Head-to-head, the Huskies have won three out of the last five SU but the Bulls are 3-2 ATS. The home team is a perfect 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS. The only game that did not follow suit was UConn’s 29-27 win last season as a 7 ½ point home favorite. The total has stayed ‘under’ in three of these five games.

This game should be a close, hard-fought battle between two teams that know how to play defense and run the ball. Scoring will be at a premium, with the Bulls finding a way to come away with a tight win. The ‘under’ might actually be the best play in this one.

The Pick: South Florida -2
