Northwestern
The Wildcats of Northwestern have had a successful season, but the injury to Dan Persa really hurt their chances from here on out. Pat Fitzgerald’s team fights hard, but Persa was the main man and with him gone they are bound to struggle.
The Northwestern offense will now be led by freshman Evan Watkins. Watkins is a tall quarterback who has some solid tools, but he really needed some more time before getting onto the field. It really hurts this offense that they don’t have any big running threat at the tailback spot. Mike Trumpy is the leading rusher for this team, but he has just 530 yards on the season. Trumpy did have his biggest game of the year last week, and they’ll need him to continue producing at a high level the rest of the year. I expect the Northwestern offense to be a little less creative without Persa under center.
The Wildcats defense was shredded up by Illinois last weekend. Mikel LeShoure ran for 330 yards against this unit. The bad news for Northwestern is they will face an even better rushing attack this week in the form of the Wisconsin Badgers. Northwestern is ranked 84th in the nation in pass defense and 82nd in the nation in run defense, so they aren’t particularly strong in either area.

The Wisconsin Badgers have been one of the most impressive teams in the country over the last few weeks. This team has been taking care of business each week, and if they do so again this week they should be headed toward a Rose Bowl berth.
Wisconsin’s offense is bolstered by what may be the best offensive line in the country. They give Scott Tolzien plenty of time to throw, and they open up plenty of holes for all the running backs to run through. John Clay has been dinged up of late, but James White and Montee Ball have stepped right in and kept the Badgers ground game producing in a big way. This rushing attack averages 240 yards per game, and they chewed up the Michigan defense last weekend. Tolzien is an accurate passer and he has plenty of weapons to throw the football to, including one of the best tight ends in the country in Lance Kendricks. This is a very good offense.
The Badgers defense isn’t quite as strong as the offense, but they have been solid this year as well. J.J. Watt has established himself as a star on the defensive line, which has been big for this team. Wisconsin did a nice job slowing down the Michigan running game last week. They have been a little susceptible against teams who can throw the ball well, but at this point Northwestern doesn’t fit that mold. Look for Wisconsin to bring a lot of heat during this game.
The Pick:
Wisconsin seems to be firing on all cylinders right now. Northwestern may have been able to stay in the game a bit with Persa, but without him I think Wisconsin runs away with this one. The Wisconsin offense is just too much for the mediocre Northwestern defense. I like Wisconsin -23 here.
