Houston Cougars vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders Preview

In a non-conference match up in the season finale for each team Texas Tech (6-5) plays host to Houston (5-6) in a game that will likely be a shootout. College football lines have Texas Tech as 9-point favorites in this game with a high total of 69.

In their last games Houston forgot to play defense in losing 59-41 to Southern Miss and Texas Tech laid a serious beat down on Weber State beating them 64-21.

It is not hard to see why the betting total for this game is at 69 since each team has a passing offense that ranks in the top 10 in the nation, but neither has a very good pass defense. Not a very good pass D is an understatement for the Red Raiders, as they rank 118th in the nation out of 120 FBS teams.

Texas Tech is already bowl eligible with 6 wins, but it will look a lot better on their resume if they are 7-5 instead of 6-6. On the other side of the coin Houston must win this game or they will not be playing in a bowl. The Red Raiders have won 2 of their last 3 games and Houston is struggling, big time, as they have lost 3 in a row.

This season neither team has been a great bet, as Texas Tech is 4-6-1 and Houston is 4-7 ATS. Houston has only covered the spread 2 times in their last 7 games and Texas Tech is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10.

This season Texas Tech is 3-3 at home and Houston is 2-3 on the road.

For Houston and their 7th ranked passing offense freshman QB David Piland will have to play well. In the loss to Southern Miss he passed for 467 yards with 4 TD and 1 INT. He has a good WR corps and they will be a major handful for the Texas Tech secondary, which has been torched all season. The Red Raiders will have to pressure Piland so he does not throw for a ton of yards and for the season the Tech pass rush has been decent with 24 sacks, but Houston has a legit offensive line only allowing 12 sacks on the season.

The pass offense is obviously the strength of the Cougars, but they can run the ball with RB Bryce Beall, but in the loss to Southern Miss he only had 17 rushing yards averaging 1.7 yards per carry. If he can pick up some yards against a Tech rushing D that ranks 67th in the nation it will take some heat of Piland.

The Red Raiders’ offense is led by QB Taylor Potts, who passed for 272 yards against Weber State last week, but only had 136 in the previous week in the blowout loss to Oklahoma. WR Lyle Leong (61 762 yards 16 TD) and WR Detron Lewis (68 rec 668 yards 4 TD) are his 2 main targets, but the Cougars really have to cover Leong, who has a knack for getting to the end zone.

Tech only has the nation’s 82nd ranked rushing offense, but RB Baron Batch has rushed for an average of just under 100 yards per game. He will likely get a lot of touches in this game against a Houston run defense that only ranks 116th in the nation.

Both teams have a great passing offense and while the Cougars rank higher in rushing yards per game Tech has run the ball better as of late and that will be the key. Batch will have a huge game and that will help keep Houston on the sidelines. The Red Raiders will win this game, but it will be close so they will not cover the spread. Also, take the Over, as this game will be a barnburner.

Betting Trends

Houston is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following a win.
Houston has an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 games and Texas Tech has an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 games as a home favorite.

Pick: Houston +9 and the Over
