No. 25 Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Mississippi Rebels Preview

In an in-state SEC rivalry game this Saturday evening the Mississippi Rebels (4-7) host the 25th ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs (7-4). College football lines have Mississippi State slight 2.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 54.

In their last games Mississippi State lost a heartbreaker 38-31 to Arkansas in double OT and Mississippi lost to LSU 43-36.

This rivalry game is called the Egg Bowl and Mississippi State is the favorite and ranked in the top 25 for the first time since 2001 and are eligible for a bowl for only the 2nd time this decade. They had a 6-game winning streak this season, but they have lost their last 2 games against ranked teams. They can stay in the top 25 with a win and likely improve the bowl they play in if they can win this big SEC game.

You can see how big this game is, as MSU center J.C. Brignone stated, “If you can’t get up for this game you’re not a real Bulldog.”

Mississippi is in a tailspin, as they have lost 5 of their last 6 games including their last 2. Their defense has been torched in the 2nd half of the season and overall their D ranks 75th in the nation. However, they are stronger defending the run (ranked 53rd on the nation) than the pass, which is good for them since the Bulldogs’ strength on offense is running the ball.

Heading into this SEC game MSU is 5-6 ATS and Mississippi 4-7. MSU has not been a great betting team against their in-state rivals in recent years, as they are 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings in Mississippi and 2-5-1 ATS in their last 8 meetings with the Rebels. However, the home team is 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games between the 2 teams.

Even though the Mississippi ranks higher than MSU in rushing yards per game and passing yards per game the Bulldogs have a much better defense, which is why they are going bowling after the NCAA season is over.

RB Vick Ballard is the big gun for the Bulldogs on offense and last week in the loss to Arkansas he had a big game rushing for 150 yards and 3 TD. QB Chris Relf, who rushed for 103 yards and a TD last week and also passed for 224 yards, joins him in the backfield. If the Rebels’ cannot contain the rushing attack of the Bulldogs then they will be in for a long game.

Ole Miss must play better defense than they have in their last 2 games when they gave up a combined 68 points and last week against LSU they gave up 470 yards of offense.

Mississippi has a better rushing attack ranked 14th in the nation and they have a stud in the backfield of Brandon Bolden, who rushed for a legit 91 yards last week in the loss to LSU, but most of that came on one run of 50 yards. Ex- Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli is the 2ndleading rusher for the Rebels and he has passed for over 1,700 yards this season. He may be counted on to move the chains in this game, as the Bulldogs have a great run defense ranking 26th in the nation, but their pass defense only ranks 88th.

The team that can defend the run has a better chance to win this game and that advantage defiantly goes the Bulldogs.

MSU wants to improve their bowl situation and they will do that in this game. The Bulldogs have a better defense and that is the key, as they will win this year’s edition of the Egg Bowl and cover the 2.5-point spread.

Betting Trends

Mississippi State is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as a favorite and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite of 0.5-3.
Mississippi is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games.

Pick: Mississippi St. -2.5
