Colorado Buffaloes vs. No. 15 Nebraska Cornhuskers Preview

In a HUGE Big 12 match up this Friday that has major BCS bowl implications Nebraska (9-2) plays host to Colorado (5-6). College football lines have Nebraska as 17.5-point favorite with a total 51.

In their last games Colorado kept their slim bowl hopes alive with a 44-36 upset win over Kansas State and Nebraska lost a barnburner 9-6 to Texas A&M.

Nebraska was upset in their last game and they could have wrapped up the Big 12 North with a win and now they are tied with Missouri atop the division, but can still win it and head to the conference title game with a win on Friday. If they can then win the Big 12 title game they will be in a BCS bowl game.

Colorado can still be eligible for a bowl in their last season in the Big 12, but they will have to beat Nebraska in this game to do that. However, that will be far from easy since Nebraska has the nation’s 7th ranked rushing offense, a great defense, and the Buffalos have yet to beat a ranked team this season.

Nebraska has to play a more disciplined game this Friday, as in their loss to Texas A&M last week the Huskers were penalized 16 times for 145 yards, which were both school records. Head coach Bo Pelini berated the officials in the game and also chewed out QB Taylor Martinez. Martinez sat out most of the first half with an injury, but came back in the 2nd half and he should play in this game. Roy Helu Jr. and backup QB Zac Lee are also injured, but should be ready to go this Friday.

The Buffalos have won their last 2 games after losing 5 straight and they have averaged 441.3 yards of offense in their last 3 games. They are playing with confidence while Nebraska has their issues and may be ripe for another upset.

This season Colorado is 5-5-1 ATS and Nebraska is 4-6-1 ATS. While Nebraska has been the better team for the past several seasons the Buffalos have been the good betting team. Colorado is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 meetings in Nebraska and 11-3 ATS in their last 14 games against the Huskers.

The Huskers hope that Martinez and Helu Jr. can go in this game, as they are the 2 leading rushers for Nebraska. In the loss to Texas A&M Nebraska only rushed for 142 yards and they committed 2 turnovers. If Lee is the QB he gives the Huskers a better passing attack, but Nebraska needs to get back to their bread-and-butter, which is running the ball. This game actually is a good match up for the Colorado defense, as their run D is strong ranking 28th in the nation and their pass D is weak ranking 113th.

Colorado is on a roll and the main reason is because of their offense. QB Cody Hawkins has played great in the Buffalos’ 2-game winning streak and has passed for 468 yards with 6 TD and 0 INT. He will be facing a very stiff test in this game against Nebraska and their 2ndranked pass defense.

The player for Colorado that has really stepped up his play is RB Rodney Stewart, who has rushed for almost 500 yards in the last 3 games including a HUGE game last week against Kansas State with 195 yards on the ground. He may be counted on to have another big game since the Nebraska rushing defense only ranks 57th in the nation and gave up 138 yards last week against Texas A&M.

Betting Trends

Colorado is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 road games and Nebraska is 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 home games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games against teams with a winning record.

In the last 4 games between these 2 Big 12 rivals the total has gone Over every time.

Pick:

Things are going the Buffalos’ way with their winning streak and with the recent issues Nebraska has, but the Huskers are at home and will not lose this game. They will get back to pounding the ball on the ground, but Colorado will continue to play well and while they will not win they will cover the spread.
