The Cincinnati Bearcats will try and keep their faint bowl hopes alive when they tangle with the Connecticut Huskies this upcoming Saturday afternoon. Kickoff from Rentschler Field in Hartford is set for 12 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.Com.

What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time, Cincinnati was in the process of wrapping up a perfect regular season and Big East title, while this season it is reduced to playing the role of spoiler as the Bearcats will try and end any title hopes that Connecticut may still entertain with a win on Saturday.

They are coming off their most impressive win of the season; a 69-38 pasting of Rutgers last Saturday as a 10 ½ point home favorite. Unfortunately, it is a case of too little and too late, as Cincinnati finds itself 4-6 on the year both straight-up and against the spread and just 2-3 SU in conference play.

A few of the main problems for this team has been a defense that has struggled to keep opposing teams out of the end zone and an offense that lacks consistency from one week to the next. The Bearcats are ranked 67th in the nation in points allowed; giving up an average of 27 points per game. The offense is averaging 29.8 points per game, but prior to its 69 point outburst against the Scarlet Knights, they only managed to score 17 points combined in losses to Syracuse and West Virginia. Connecticut comes into this one on a three-game winning streak including an impressive 23-6 win over Syracuse last Saturday. The Huskies covered as a four-point road underdog and the total stayed ‘under’ the 45 point line. The victory moved their record to 6-4 both SU and ATS. At 3-2 in the conference, UConn still has a decent shot at winning the Big East if it wins this game and beats South Florida next week and Pittsburgh loses to West Virginia and/or Cincinnati in its final two games.

The Huskies have relied on playing tough defense and a solid ground game for the majority of their wins this season. They are 30th in the country in points allowed; giving up an average of 20.5 per game. They are also averaging 180.3 yards per game rushing, which ranks them 34th overall. RB Jordan Todman has led the way with 1,306 rushing yards on 238 carries. He also leads the team in touchdowns with 11.

Trends:

Cincinnati is 1-3 SU and ATS on the road this season. The total has stayed ‘under’ in three of its last five games overall.
Connecticut is a perfect 5-0 SU and ATS in five home games this year. The total has stayed ‘under’  in three of its last four games overall.

Head-to-head, the Bearcats have won five out of the last six games SU, but the Huskies are 4-2 ATS. The last time these two met in Hartford, UConn rolled to a 40-16 win as a three-point home underdog. Last year the Bearcats won 47-45 as a 16 ½ point home favorite. The total has gone ‘over’ in three of the last four games.

Nothing has gone according to plan for Cincinnati this season as a huge loss of talent and its head coach from last season has had a major impact on its results this year. Connecticut , on the other hand, has shaken off a slow start to find itself right in the thick of the Big East conference title race. The momentum is with the Huskies in this one.

The Pick: Connecticut -1 ½.
