Penn State

For the second straight week it was a tale of two halves for the Penn State Nittany Lions. Two weeks ago they came back from 21-0 deficit against Northwestern to win 35-21. Last weekend, the Nittany Lions led Ohio State 14-3 at half, only to lose 38-14.

Matt McGloin is the starting quarterback for Penn State, and he has done a nice job in his time under center. The Penn State offense has been improved because of his ability to throw the football accurately. Derek Moye has stepped up as the leading receiver for this Penn State offense. Evan Royster had just 49 yards on 16 carries last week at Ohio State. Freshman Silas Redd has been taking some of the carries from Royster of late, and Redd has shown his explosiveness. The offensive line of Penn State has improved quite a bit as the season has moved along.

The Penn State defense started out the season very well, but they have struggled some of late. Ohio State dominated the line of scrimmage in the second half last weekend, and the Buckeyes finished with 314 yards on the ground against Penn State. The run defense has struggled the last few weeks, which has to be concerning for Joe Paterno. Indiana’s defense is extremely weak, so I expect Penn State to be able to get things going offensively in this game.

Indiana

Two weeks ago, Indiana almost stunned the Iowa Hawkeyes. Last weekend, Indiana was beaten by a stunning score of 83-20 in Wisconsin. The Badgers scored on every single possession in what was an absolute beat down the entire way. Indiana must put that behind them quickly.

The Indiana offense has been solid all year long. Ben Chappell is a consistent quarterback that leads the offense efficiently. He left last weekend’s game with a hip injury, but he is expected to play this week against Penn State. Chappell has thrown 19 touchdown passes and just 8 interceptions on the year. Terrance Turner, Demarlo Belcher, and Tandon Doss form the best wide receiver trio in the conference. Doss is the best play maker of the three, and he is great on special teams as well. The offense needs a running game to help them stay balanced, and they haven’t found that all season.

The Indiana defense has been terrible this season. Wisconsin put up 83 points and 598 yards last weekend. Indiana is now allowing 34 points per game this season. Indiana has only 14 sacks this year, and their secondary often has trouble staying with the opposition’s top receivers. On the front line the Hoosiers just don’t have the run stuffer they need in a conference like the Big Ten. Penn State’s improved offensive line will be a tough challenge for this Hoosier defense.

The Pick:

The Nittany Lions haven’t been too consistent this year, but they appear to be improving as the season moves along. After the game they played last weekend, I can’t back Indiana in this one. I like Penn State -10 in this matchup.

Penn State vs. Indiana Score Prediction: Penn State 35 Indiana 20
