The West Virginia Mountaineers look to keep their conference title hopes alive when they take on the Louisville Cardinals in a Big East matchup this upcoming Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.com.

West Virginia started this season with high hopes and expectations for a chase at a national title, but losses to LSU and Syracuse quickly ended that dream, so a run at a conference title is all they have left to pursue. A convincing 37-10 over last year’s conference champion, Cincinnati last week was a step in the right direction. The Mountaineers covered as a five-point home favorite and the total stayed ‘under’ the 49 ½ point line. The victory leaves West Virginia at 6-3 straight-up and 5-4 against the spread. It is 2-2 SU in Big East play.

The Mountaineers still have one of the best defenses in the country. They are ranked third overall in points allowed; giving up an average of just 13.2 per game. Their offense has been much less productive and is ranked 74th in the nation in scoring; averaging 25.9 points per game. QB Geno Smith’s numbers have been decent as he has completed 65.2 percent of his passes for 1,870 yards. He has thrown 19 touchdowns against just six interceptions. RB Noel Devine is the team’s leading rusher with 770 yards on 161 carries. NFL Betting

Louisville’s shot at the Big East title ended in a bitter 24-21 overtime loss to South Florida last Saturday. The Cardinals were a two-point home favorite and the total stayed ‘under’  the 46 ½ point line. The loss dropped them to 5-5 on the season both SU and ATS. Where it really hurt was in conference play as Louisville fell to 2-3 SU.

The Cardinals are still vastly improved from the past few seasons and are ranked in the top 30 in the country in points allowed on defense (22nd) and  rushing yards on offense (28th). RB Bilal Powell is ranked sixth in the country with 1,207 rushing yards on a 184 carries. He leads the team in touchdowns with nine.

West Virginia is 1-2 SU  and ATS in its last three road games. The total has stayed ‘under’  in seven of its last 10 games overall.

Louisville is 3-3 SU in its last six home games  but just 2-4 ATS. The total has stayed ‘under’  in four of its last seven games overall.

Head to head, the Mountaineers have won eight out of the last 10 games SU, but the series is tied at five games apiece ATS. The total has gone ‘over’ in four of the last five games. Two years ago, West Virginia won 35-21 as a 6 ½ point road favorite. Last season it won 17-9 SU, but did not cover as a 17 ½ point home favorite.

The Mountaineers know that a win this week could set-up next week’s ‘Backyard Brawl’ against Pitt as a winner-take-all contest for the conference title. That is motivation enough to ensure they do not trip up this week against the Cardinals.

The Pick: West Virginia -5
