Virginia Cavaliers (4-6)

Hmm. Last week wasn’t exactly what Virginia, not to mention its fans and bettors, expected. The Cavaliers came up huge with a win over Miami but followed that up last week with a crushing collapse against Maryland at home.

The Terrapins lit Virginia up for three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter en route to a 42-23 win. They totalled 425 yards. That wasn’t really the big disappointment – Virginia allows 400 yards per game, good for 82nd in the nation – but Virginia’s offensive flop was.

The Cavaliers have the country’s 37th ranked offense and are 25th in passing; pretty impressive for a 4-6 team. But leading rusher and TD machine Keith Payne had just 68 yards on 18 carries and quarterback Marc Verica threw two interceptions in the loss. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

If Virginia’s offense sputtered against Maryland’s so-so defense, are the Cavaliers in big trouble against Boston College, which boasts one of the ACC’s elite defenses?

Boston College Eagles (5-5)

Boston College’s season has been a rollercoaster. It started 2-0 before hitting the tough part of its schedule and losing five straight. But the Eagles have rallied nicely of late, winning three straight, including their last two on the road. Now, they get their final home game with plenty on the line, as a bowl game is within reach.

The constant for Boston College this year has been defense. The Eagles have the country’s No. 1 rushing “D,” allowing just 74.4 yards per game, and are 13th overall in total defense. Offensively, they’ve been pretty anemic, but there are some positive signs of late.

Chase Rettig had a decent game under center last week, throwing for 230 yards and two touchdowns while (finally) not throwing a pick. Better yet for Boston College, Montel Harris has really caught fire. He has posted five straight 100-yard rushing efforts and has run for six scores in his last four games.

The pick:

I feel great about Boston College this week. Winning streak? Check. Stout defense? Check. Hot running back facing bad run defense? Check. Home game? Check. Something important to play for? Check.
