Purdue
The Purdue Boilermakers looked like a team that could make some noise before the season, but injuries have held them back in a big way this year. The team must win its last two games of the year to become bowl eligible, and that seems extremely unlikely at this point.
Rob Henry and Sean Robinson are sharing time at the quarterback spot for Purdue right now. Both are freshmen and have shown their inexperience over the last few games. Purdue has had almost no passing attack the entire season. The Boilermakers average just 137 passing yards per game, which is last in the Big Ten. Dan Dierking has done a solid job at the running back spot, but he has struggled in the last couple games. This offense has no identity at this point.
The Purdue defense is a mediocre unit. Ryan Kerrigan is terrific at the defensive end position, but the defense is a little short on depth overall. The secondary is also prone to giving up huge chunks of yardage against high quality passers. Kirk Cousins will test this Purdue secondary on Saturday afternoon. In order to slow down the Spartans offense, Purdue must force Cousins to throw before he is ready. Expect Purdue to bring plenty of blitzes. 
Michigan State
Mark Dantonio’s squad has had a terrific year, and they are still right in the thick of the Big Ten race. They must avoid a letdown game, which has cost them so often in the past. They are coming off a bye week, so they should be ready for this one.
Kirk Cousins is the leader of this offense at the quarterback position. Cousins had a terrible game in Iowa City, but he has had a good year overall. The running back tandem of Edwin Baker and Le’Veon Bell is the bread and butter of the offense. Michigan State is running for 177 yards per game. The Spartans are averaging 31 points per game. The main reason Michigan State has been so successful on offense is they are a very balanced team that can beat you in a variety of ways. This is a strong offense that poses matchup problems for most defenses.
The Michigan State defense was a real weak spot last year, but they have improved quite a bit this season. They are 28th in the nation in total defense, and they are only allowing 18.8 points per game. They are a bit vulnerable against good quarterbacks, but Purdue cannot move the ball through the air. Greg Jones leads a strong trio of linebackers that swarm to the football very well. The Spartans have struggled to pressure opposing quarterbacks. That is an area they must improve on in the last few weeks of the year.
The Pick:
Purdue just doesn’t have much of an offense at all right now. Michigan State is strong against the run, which should be plenty to contain this Purdue offense. The Michigan State balanced offense should put up plenty of points in this one. I think Michigan State covers in this matchup.
