Wisconsin

Wisconsin is the front-runner to be the Big Ten’s participant in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. The Badgers need to make sure they don’t slip up before that though, and this is their biggest test in quite a few weeks.

The Wisconsin offense put up 83 points last weekend, so they are obviously in good form right now. It all starts with a powerful offensive line. Wisconsin’s front line may be the best in the country this year. The bad news is it appears John Clay will not be able to play this weekend. Clay is the Badgers primary runner. The good news for Wisconsin is they do have plenty of talent ready in the backfield. James White and Montee Ball will share the running back duties, and both of them are terrific runners. Scott Tolzien is an efficient passer for the Badgers as well. Tolzien is completing 72.5% of his passes so far this season.

The Wisconsin defense lost star linebacker Chris Borland earlier this season, but they have still been a solid unit. They rank in the top 30 in the nation in every major defensive statistical category. This is a unit that is full of heady players who understand where they are supposed to be at all times. Michigan will test this defense quite a bit, and I expect the Wolverines to be able to put up quite a few points.

Michigan

The Michigan Wolverines are now 7-3 after defeating Purdue last weekend. Rich Rodriguez’s team started 5-0, but they have been a bit shaky in the last few weeks. This is a huge chance for Michigan to show the nation that they are back.

Michigan has the top ranked offense in the Big Ten this year. The Wolverines are led by Denard Robinson. Robinson has rushed for 1,417 yards already this year. He is averaging 7 yards per carry at the quarterback position, which is quite an accomplishment. Robinson still needs to work on his passing game, but he has clearly improved in that area. Michigan has a great group of wide receivers, which will test the Wisconsin secondary this weekend. Roy Roundtree has become the big play maker on the outside, and Robinson loves to throw it his way. Michigan is averaging 38 points per game this season.

The Michigan defense has been absolutely terrible this year. They rank 100th in the nation in total defense, and they are 114th in pass defense. Over the course of the last six games, this defense is allowing 38.2 points per game. The worst news for this unit is that their two most productive players are both dinged up. Both Mike Martin and Jonas Mouton are questionable for this Saturday’s game. Michigan absolutely must stop the run this weekend if they are going to win this football game.

The Pick:

I don’t expect Michigan to be able to stop Wisconsin much at all, but at the same time I do expect Michigan to score quite a few points in this game. The line is set quite high, but I do think this one will go over the posted total. I also like the Badgers to cover here.

Wisconsin vs. Michigan Score Prediction: Wisconsin 42 Michigan 31

Good pick. If the Badgers can drop 80+ (absolutely ridiculous, by the way) on Indiana, then there won’t be any issues at all lighting the scoreboard against Michigan. I don’t know how the Wolverines defense got so bad, so quickly (past couple seasons) but it has.

Even without Clay, I think UW will be able to run all over the Maize and Blue. I don’t see any way that either of these teams score less than 25-30 points a piece.

It doesn’t get easier for UM, either, with Ohio State next week. Seven wins is quite likely where the Wolverines stay in 2010.
