Michigan

The Michigan Wolverines beat Illinois last weekend in a triple overtime thriller. A 67-65 win like last weekend’s is big for the team, but it also showed how far their defense has to go. Michigan is now bowl eligible, but this team expects more than just a low level bowl game.

The Michigan offense has been stellar this season. Denard Robinson was dinged up last week again, but Tate Forcier stepped in and did a great job in relief. Robinson is expected to be back under center for this one. Robinson continues to pile up some extremely impressive statistics. He has ran for 1,349 yards on the season, and he is on pace to break the record for most rushing yards ever by a college football quarterback. The passing game has been solid of late as well. Roy Roundtree had a memorable afternoon against Illinois, and Hemingway and Stonum are also solid receivers. Michigan is currently fifth in the nation in total offense.

The Michigan defense is just awful right now. The team ranks 114th in the nation in total yards allowed per game, and 105th in points allowed per game. The defense is often playing eight or nine freshman, which is definitely part of their problem. Purdue’s offense is weak of late, so Michigan will get a chance to face a less than terrific offense this weekend.

Purdue

The Purdue Boilermakers looked like they had a chance to pull a big upset over the Wisconsin Badgers last weekend, but it all fall apart in the second half. They get another chance to pull off a big upset at home this weekend.

Starting quarterback Rob Henry has missed the last couple games with a finger injury. He is questionable for this game. Sean Robinson has been the starter the last couple weeks. Robinson is another freshman with very little experience. The downside is that Robinson doesn’t have the same running ability that Henry does. Dan Dierking has been the primary weapon for Purdue’s offense this year. Dierking is averaging 5.5 yards per carry, and he has proven tough to bring down. Overall, this is a very weak Purdue offense. They average just 17.6 points per game, which is the lowest in the Big Ten.

The Purdue defense has a pretty strong front line, but they are weak in the secondary. Ryan Kerrigan leads the Big Ten in sacks and Purdue gets after the quarterback well. The rushing defense is mediocre, and they will be tested in a big way this weekend. The secondary struggles to keep the play in front of them so don’t be surprised if Michigan hits some deep passes in this game. Purdue must contain Denard Robinson to have a chance in this game.

The Pick:

The Wolverines should be able to move the ball at will in this one. Michigan’s defense is poor, but I don’t think Purdue has enough weapons to exploit that weakness. I think Michigan will cruise to victory in this one. I like Michigan -13 here.
