The Syracuse Orange head south to Piscataway, NJ to take on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights this upcoming Saturday afternoon in this late-season Big East matchup. Kickoff from Rutgers Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.

Syracuse suddenly finds itself playing for a bowl invitation after last season’s disappointing 4-8 campaign. Last week the Orange lost some momentum in this quest by stumbling against Louisville 28-20 in a game they were favored by seven points at home. The loss dropped Syracuse to 6-3 both straight-up and against the spread for the year. It is 3-2 SU in Big East play.

Defense has been the name of the game this season for the Orange. They are giving up an average of just 18.7 points per game, which is 18th best in the nation. Their offense has been a whole other story. Syracuse is averaging just a 178.2 yards per game in the air and 25.1 total points per game. QB Ryan Nassib has only completed 56.1 percent of his passes for 1,563 yards. To his credit, he has found the end zone 15 times and has only tossed five interceptions this season. RB Delone Carter has led the team’s rushing game with 853 yards on 161 carries. He also leads the team with seven TD’s. NFL Betting

Rutgers comes into this game having lost two straight games and four out of its last six. Last Wednesday night the Scarlet Knights fell to South Florida by one point 28-27. They easily covered as a 10 ½ point road underdog and the total went ‘over’ the 43 ½ point line. Rutgers is now 4-4 SU on the year and 2-6 ATS. It is 1-2 SU in conference play.

The Knight’s defense was extremely tough to score on earlier in the season, giving up an average of just 12 points a game. That has all changed as its been torched for an average of 28.3 points per game in its last four. Rutgers’ offense is averaging just 21.9 points per game, which is ranked 95th in the country. The one bright spot for the Knights has been the play of WR’s Mohamed Sanu and Mark Harrison. These two have combined for 61 receptions for 762 yards and six TD’s.

Betting Trends:

Syracuse is 4-2 both SU and ATS in its last six games on the road. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of its last six games overall.
Rutgers is 4-3 SU in its last seven home games but just 2-5 ATS. The total has gone ‘over’ in seven of its last 10 games overall.

Head-to-head, Rutgers has won five of the last seven games SU and is also 5-2 ATS. One of those losses came last season with the Orange pulling off the31-13 upset as a 10-point home underdog. The year before the Scarlet Knights covered as a 14-point home favorite in a 35-17 win.

This is clearly not the same team that Rutgers has beat up on over the past few years as it finds itself the underdog for the first time since 2005. Take the Orange to atone for last week’s letdown against the Cardinals with a big win this week over the Scarlet Knights.

The Pick: Syracuse -3
