Kansas Jayhawks vs. No. 8 Nebraska Cornhuskers Preview

This Saturday night in a game where oddsmakers think will be a major blowout Nebraska (8-1) hosts Kansas (3-6). College football lines have Nebraska has huge 35.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 61.

In their last games Nebraska beat Iowa State 31-30 in OT and Kansas snapped their 4-game losing streak and beat Colorado 52-45.

Kansas has lost 21 straight at Nebraska and it looks to be 22 straight since the Huskers will get starting QB Taylor Martinez back. Nebraska was lucky to come away with a W in their last game against Iowa State, as they intercepted a pass in the end zone after the Cyclones faked the extra point on the game’s final play. That was a HUGE win for them, as since Missouri lost they are now the major favorites to win the Big 12 North and play in the conference title game. They only face one team in their last 3 that has a winning record, so it is likely they will play in the Big 12 championship for a shot for a BCS bowl game.

Kansas has had far from the best season going 3-6, but they did win their last game. They need to win their last 3 games just be eligible for a bowl, but that is a major long shot. First they have to beat Nebraska this Saturday and also have to beat #10 Oklahoma State and # 17 Missouri. Yeah, not gonna happen. Oh well, at least they have some momentum in this game after a W in their last game where they came back and scored 35 points in the 4th quarter.

This season Nebraska is 4-4-1 ATS and Kansas is 4-5 ATS.

They likely do not need him against an inferior Kansas squad, but QB Taylor Martinez will be back under center and the freshman QB has not only passed for 1,161 yards this season, but he is also the Huskers’ leading rusher with 906 yards and 9 TD. For the Jayhawks to have any chance of the massive upset, or even to cover the big spread, they will have to play well against the Huskers and their 6th ranked rushing offense. Last week without Martinez Nebraska still rushed for 235 yards.

Kansas will have to contain the trio of Martinez, RB Roy Helu Jr. (906 yards 9 TD), and RB Rex Burkhead, who rushed for 129 yards last week. Far from easy for even a team with team with a good rushing defense, which Kansas not is ranking 108th in the nation giving up an average of 202.78 rushing yards per game.

Martinez gives the Huskers a better aerial attack and he will be facing a Kansas secondary that gave up 322 passing yards to Colorado last week. Basically, Kansas does not have a good defense and in their last 5 games they have given up an average of 47.8 points per game.

Kansas QB Quinn Mecham has started the last 2 games taking over for Jordan Webb and he played well in the win over Colorado passing for 252 yards with 2 TD and 2 INT. Don’t look for him to have a good game against a Nebraska pass defense that ranks 6th in the nation.

James Sims is the featured RB for the Jayhawks and he had his best game of the season last week rushing for 123 yards and 4 TD. Nebraska only ranks 73rd in the nation defending the run and last week against Iowa State they gave up 157 yards on the ground. Sims will have to have another great game for Kansas to have any shot in this game.

The last 2 seasons Kansas has lost to Nebraska, but they covered the spread both times. However, they have only covered the spread 2 times in their last 7 games at Nebraska.

Nebraska will easily win this game, but a 35.5-point spread? Man, that is tough to call. They will rack up a ton of yards on the ground and I will say they will cover the spread. However, I think the safer pick in the Over, as in the last 5 games between these 2 teams the total has gone Over every time and in the last 5 games when Nebraska is a favorites of more than 10.5 points they have an Over record of 4-1.

Pick: Nebraska -35.5 and the Over

One reply on “KU Jayhawks vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers Week 11 Free Pick”

Everyone would be raving about Martinez if Denard Robinson hadn’t been having the year he has and with Helu and Burkhead, it constitutes a phenomenal rushing trio for the Huskers. Combine that with a strong Huskers D even without graduated Ndamukong Suh, and it’s a great formula to win ball games. Like the pick here and look for the Huskers to win not just the North, but the Big 12.
