Wake Forest Demon Deacons (2-7)
After allowing 62 and 52 points to Maryland and Virginia Tech the two games prior, Wake Forest held Boston College to a respectable 23 points last week. Of course, it still wasn’t enough to get the Demon Deacons a victory. The nation’s No. 95 offense was no match for Boston College’s stout group.
It’s never complicated handicapping Wake Forest. We all know that the Demon Deacons simply aren’t good. I say that every week. Wake Forest is especially bad on the road, having allowed 50 or more points three times. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
Passing has been the real problem for Wake Forest this year. Tanner Price has more interceptions than touchdown passes; he threw four picks last week. But the Demon Deacons actually run the ball quite well, ranking 42nd in the nation at 168 yards per game. We can give them a mulligan on their ground struggles against Boston College since the Eagles are elite at stopping the run. Josh Harris averages 5.8 yards per carry and has five scores for Wake Forest this year. Too bad the Demon Deacons always have to play from behind. Who knows what they could do if they got to run the ball more?
North Carolina State Wolfpack (6-3)
Ouch. It’s not often that you hold a team to 46 rushing yards and lose, but that’s what N.C. State did against Clemson last week. The Tigers killed N.C. State when it mattered, converting eight third downs, and held the Wolfpack to just 63 rushing yards.
History tells us that N.C. State comes out angry after getting its heart broken. After its first loss, it dropped 44 points on a good defensive Boston College team. After its second loss, it pulled the upset over Florida State.
The pick:
Look for N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson to get back on track and play like he did two games ago, when he ran for three scores on FSU. Wake Forest allows 211-plus rushing yards per game. It won’t have an answer for Wilson. This game should get ugly in a hurry. You know whom to pick.
