Iowa State vs. Colorado Buffalos Preview

In a Big 12 match up between a couple of teams that are coming off very tough losses Colorado (3-6) hosts Iowa State (5-5). College betting lines have Iowa State as 2.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 55.

In their last games Iowa State lost to Nebraska 31-30 and lost to Kansas 52-45.

Iowa State is only one win away from being bowl eligible and they could have got there last week, as well as improving their bowl position, but they failed on a 2-point conversion on the last play of the game to lose to 8th ranked Nebraska by a single point. However, they can get to a bowl for the 2nd season in a row by beating a Buffalos’ team that has major issues.

Colorado was up big against Kansas last week, but allowed the Jayhawks to score 35 points, yes 35 points, in the 4th quarter. The Buffalos have lost 5 straight games and the loss to Kansas was likely the last straw, as head coach Dan Hawkins was recently fired. This has not been a good season for Colorado, to say the least, but this is their last one in the Big 12 with them moving to the Pac 12 next year.

Heading into this Big 12 game Iowa State is 5-5 ATS and Colorado is 3-5-1 ATS. While the Cyclones have covered the spread in 5 of the last 6 games against the Buffalos the home team is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these 2 teams.

Iowa State was solid on offense in the narrow loss to Nebraska, as they racked up 203 passing yards and 157 rushing yards. QB Austen Arnaud and RB Alexander Robinson played well and Robinson has come on strong in the 2nd half of the season rushing for over 100 yards in 3 straight games.

Colorado ranks 55th defending the run, but their pass defense only ranks 112th in the nation. Last week against Kansas they gave up 453 yards to Kansas (252 passing yards and 201 rushing yards).

Can the Colorado D keep Iowa State from lighting up the scoreboard? I would say no. In the previous 4 games the Buffalos faced the solid offensive teams of Missouri, Baylor, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma and they allowed a mediocre offensive team in Kansas score the most points against them this season.

Colorado’s offense came alive in this last game and QB Cody Hawkins passed for 322 yards with 3 TD and 2 INT and RB Rodney Stewart rushed for 175 yards with 3 TD. Iowa State is not very good defending the run or the pass and last week they allowed Nebraska to rush for 235 yards. Iowa State only has 11 sacks on the season so Hawkins may have a big game facing a Cyclones’ pass defense that ranks 103rd in the nation.

I think Iowa State is a better team and even though Colorado has issues teams tend to step up and play well after a head coach is fired. Still, I am going with Iowa State in this game to cover the spread since they have a better rushing attack.

Betting Trends

Iowa State is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite, but 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as a road favorite. In their last 5 road games the total has gone Under every time.
Colorado 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 home games, 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall, and has an Over record of 6-2 in their last 8 home games.

Pick: Iowa State -2.5
