No. 10 Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Texas Longhorns

This Saturday a Texas (4-5) squad that has lost their last 3 games hosts an Oklahoma State (8-1) team that racked up 725 yards of offense in their last game. College football lines has Oklahoma State as 5.5-point favorites in this Big 12 match up with a total of 56.

In their last games Oklahoma State beat Baylor 55-28 and Texas lost to Kansas State 39-14.

Texas is in a freefall, as they have lost 4 of their last 5 games, have lost 3 straight at home for the first time since 1997, and after playing in the National Championship game last season they are in jeopardy of even playing in a bowl this season. Turnovers have simply killed the Longhorns this season and QB Garrett Gilbert had 5 picks in the Kansas State loss and he has twice as many INT’s than TD’s (14-7).

However, their D is legit and they are not a bad team, but they simply cannot turn the ball over or they will lose this game.

Oklahoma State is on track to play in the Big 12 title game, but they still have some work to get there. This game and the next one against Kansas are big, but THE game may be their last one when they host Oklahoma and the winner of that game will likely represent the Big 12 South in the conference title game. In an interesting fact OSU has never playing in the Big 12 title game or a BCS bowl game.

Texas will be facing a Cowboys’ offense that ranks 3rd in the nation in points scored per game, has scored over 60 points twice this season, over 50 points 3 times, and has the nation’s 3rd ranked passing offense.

This season Oklahoma State is 7-2 ATS while Texas is only 2-7 ATS. OSU has only covered the spread 3 times in their last 11 games against Texas and they have not beat the Longhorns in Texas since way back in 1944!

To say that the Cowboys have weapons on offense is like saying the BCS system is a little hard to understand. Yeah, major understatement. QB Brandon Weeden ranks 2nd in the nation in passing yards per game, RB Kendall Hunter ranks 3rd in the nation in rushing yards per game, and WR Justin Blackmon ranks 1st in the nation in receiving yards per game. OSU is stacked on offense and they will be tough to beat.

While Texas has had their issues their D has played pretty well. They rank 2nd in the nation in pass defense and 37th in run defense. They will get a big dose of Hunter and Weeden this Saturday and Hunter may be a bigger concern, since the Longhorns rushing D is not as good as their passing D.

For the Longhorns it is simple, they cannot turn the ball over. In their 5 losses this season they have 18 turnovers and in their 4 wins they only have 5. Oklahoma State only has the nation’s 113th ranked pass defense, but they have come up with 12 interceptions. Gabbert has to find his own receivers for a change, as if he gets picked off multiple times again Texas will lose.

The Longhorns only have the nation’s 79th ranked rushing offense, but they have gotten down early in their losses and have had to air it out to come back. If they can establish the run it gives them a better chance to win and it is very hard to get picked off if you do not pass the ball. Oklahoma State has the nation’s 45th ranked run defense, but last week they gave up 197 rushing yards to Baylor.

Texas is reeling and Oklahoma State is on a roll and that will continue in this game. The Longhorns will not be able to keep up with the Cowboys, who will rack up a ton of yards again, win this game, and cover the spread.

Betting Trends

Oklahoma State is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games, 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 road games, and has an Over record of 7-2 this season.
Texas is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games, 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games against teams with a winning record, and has an Under record of 6-2 in their last 8 home games.

Pick: Oklahoma State -5.5

Check your fact a little better…OSU played in a BCS bowl game last year. They have one of the best bowl records in the big 12. Do your homework.

Hey Matt, thanks for the comment, but I am afraid you are wrong and and I did my homework. OSU played in the Cotton Bowl last season, which is not a BCS Bowl game. They are still searching for their first BCS Bowl Game and this season they have a legit shot.
