Ball State Cardinals vs. Buffalo Bulls Preview

In a Mid American Conference match up on Saturday between a couple of teams that will not go bowling this post season the Buffalo Bulls (2-7) host the Ball State Cardinals (3-7). College football lines have Buffalo as 3-point favorites in this game with a total of 46.5.

Buffalo played in the International Bowl a couple years back, but they have not played well for the last couple of seasons and this season they have lost 4 in a row and their offense is really struggling. In their 4-game losing streak they have scored over 10 points twice and have been out-scored 142-40. They are playing for pride and can get some if the beat Ball State on Friday night.

Ball State stopped the bleeding halting their 4-game losing streak with a OT win over Akron in their last game and they look to win their 2nd away game of the season this Friday against Buffalo.

In their last games Ball State beat Akron 37-30 in OT and Buffalo lost to Ohio 34-17.

Heading into this MAC match up Ball State is 3-7 ATS and Buffalo is 2-7 ATS.

For the Cardinals to win they will have to run the ball, as they have a legit rushing offense ranking 55th in the nation, but only rank 111th in passing yards per game. MiQuale Lewis has rushed for nearly 400 yards this season, but in his last 2 games he has only averaged around 3.3 yards per carry. However, he will be facing a Bulls’ run D that ranks 63rd in the nation and gave up 185 rushing yard to Ohio last week.

RB Eric Williams is the leading rusher for Ball State, but he only has 16 yards on the ground in the last 2 games. In the win over Akron the Cardinals actually aired it out and they gave freshman QB Keith Wenning a shot and he took it passing for 217 yards with 3 TD. However, he had 3 INT in the game and for the season he has more INT’s than TD’s (14-13). Buffalo has a legit pass defense ranking 29th in the nation and in their last loss to Ohio they gave up 201 yards in the air.

Buffalo relies on their defense, as they do not rank in the top 80 in the nation in passing or rushing yards per game. They only rank 117th in the nation, out of 120 teams in points scored per game (15.1). However, their offense will have a chance to pad their stats against a Ball State defense that is weak against the pass and the run. Freshman QB Alex Zordich has started the last 4 games for Buffalo and in the Bulls loss to Ohio he passed for 84 yards and rushed for 59 yards. If the Buffalo D cannot stop Ball State from scoring he will have to step up and have a great game to win this home game.

One of the main reasons these teams will not be going to the post-season is turnovers. Ball State ranks 119th in the nation with 28 turnovers lost and Buffalo is not much better ranking 117th with 26 turnovers lost. Since neither offense is a dynamic one turnovers are vital, as they team that can limit them has a great chance to win.

This is a tough game in terms of betting when looking at the trends, as Ball State is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games and Buffalo is 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games.

Neither team has much to play for and neither team plays much defense so the Over may be a good pick in this game and the trends point to that. In Ball State’s last 5 games the total has gone Over every time and they have an O/U record of 7-2-1 on the season. On top of that Buffalo has an Over record of 5-1 in their last 6 games against teams with a losing record.

Ball State can run the ball, but Buffalo has a better defense and have a young QB that wants to prove he is THE man for the job next season. Zordich will have a good game and the Bulls will snap their 4-game losing streak and win this game and cover the spread and give their fans some thing to cheer about since they can’t do that for the Bills this season.
