The Cincinnati Bearcats look to resuscitate their season when they take on the West Virginia Mountaineers this upcoming Saturday afternoon in a Big East showdown. Kickoff from Mountaineer Field is scheduled for 12 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.com.

What a difference a year makes. Last year at this time a fifth ranked, undefeated Cincinnati team just won its ninth straight game and was flying high heading into this matchup. This season the Bearcats have lost four out of their last six games including a 31-7 blowout at the hands of Syracuse in their last outing on Oct. 30. They were a six-point home favorite and the total stayed ‘under’ the 46 ½ point line. The loss dropped them to 3-5 both straight-up and against the spread on the season. They also fell to 1-2 SU in conference play.

Cincinnati’s defense is giving up an average of 24.4 points per game, ranking it 58th in the country. The Bearcats scoring offense has been even worse; averaging just 27.4 points per game which ranks it 63rd. QB Zach Collaros’s numbers are not that bad, completing 61.8 percent of his passes for 1,918 yards. He does have 20 touchdown passes against only four interceptions. Collaros did injure his leg in their 38-30 loss to South Florida on Oct. 22 but is listed as probable for this game. NFL Betting

West Virginia started the season winning five out of its first six games but back-to-back losses in its last two games has this team scrambling for a win as well. The Mountaineers lost to Syracuse 19-14 as a 13 ½ point home favorite and then followed that up with a 16-13 OT loss to Connecticut as a 4 ½ point road favorite. The losses have dropped them to 5-3 SU on the year and 4-4 ATS. West Virginia is also 1-2 SU in Big East play.

The Mountaineers have had some major problems holding onto the ball lately, committing seven turnovers in their last two games. Their last one against the Huskies, a Ryan Clarke fumble at the one-yard line in overtime proved to be the costliest of them all. QB Geno Smith has completed 65.7 percent of his passes for 1,696 yards and has 15 TD passes and RB Noel Devine has 693 yards rushing on 143 carries.

Cincinnati is 2-3 SU in its last five games on the road and 1-4 ATS. The total has gone ‘over’ in six of its last 10 games overall.

West Virginia is 4-2 SU and 3-3 ATS in its last six home games. The total has stayed ‘under’ in six of its last nine overall.

Head-to-head, the Mountaineers have won seven out of the last 10 games SU but are just 4-4-2 ATS. The Bearcats have won the last two, covering as a seven-point road underdog in a 26-23 win in 2008. They also won last year 24-21 but did not cover as a 9 ½ point home favorite.

This year is a whole new ballgame with West Virginia favored by six points at home. The Mountaineers are the better team between the two and will right the ship with a big win at home this week.
