Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-3)

Georgia Tech enters the Thursday nighter with some sexy stats on paper, leading the country in rushing with 317.4 yards per game, but the Yellow Jackets have to be sweating a bit as they travel to Virginia Tech this week. After all, their top weapon was totally neutralized in their last game.

The Yellow Jackets had a bye last week but, the week prior, they struggled to do what they do best in a 27-13 loss to Clemson. They ran for 242 yards, pedestrian by their standards, and Josh Nesbitt ran 15 times for just two yards. In the passing game, he was just 6 or 19 for 83 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

That’s the problem with Georgia Tech’s offense. With respect to Anthony Allen, Nesbitt is the focal point. The quarterback leads the team in rushing touchdowns with eight and has just 41 fewer rushing yards than Allen, the featured back. If teams stop Nesbitt on the ground, they stop the Jackets, particularly because Georgia Tech doesn’t pass the ball well. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

It ranks second-last in the nation with 84.8 passing yards per game. Sure, that stat partially reflects Georgia Tech’s total commitment to the run. But, when Nesbitt does throw, he completes just 38.2 per cent of his passes.

(20) Virginia Tech Hokies (6-2)

It wouldn’t be superlative to say that Virginia Tech has been one of the country’s best teams since its disastrous 0-2 start. Since then, the Hokies have crushed opponents by an average of 24 points per game. They’ve scored at least 41 points in four of their five wins.

Perhaps most exciting for Virginia Tech fans is the way their team’s quarterback has elevated his game this season. Tyrod Taylor has taken the team on his shoulders, throwing 11 touchdown passes versus two picks during Virginia Tech’s current six-game winning streak.

The pick:

All signs point to another Virginia Tech win, even with the spread at 13 points. The Hokies have beaten the spread every time during their six-game streak. At 53rd in the country, Georgia Tech’s defense isn’t a sieve, but it isn’t a shutdown unit either. The Hokies average 424.6 yard s of offense and 37 points per game. They should put Georgia Tech in a hole early and, once that happens, the all-run, all-the-time Yellow Jackets will be forced to pass. That ain’t their strong suit.
