No. 12 Missouri Tigers vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders Preview

Texas Tech (4-4) has no chance to win the Big 12, but Missouri (7-1) does and to get to the title game they will have to beat the Red Raiders in their house this Saturday night. College football lines have Missouri as 4-point favorites in their game with a total of 58.5.

Missouri is tied with Nebraska atop the Big 12 South, but they lost to the Huskers last week and for them to make the conference championship game they will need the Huskers to lose. That may not happen since Nebraska does not face one more team that is ranked. Mizzou also does not face one more ranked team and if they win out they still have an outside shot at a BCS game, but it is unlikely.

Texas Tech has lost 4 of their last 5 games and while they have a great passing offense their defense ranks 113th in the nation and their pass defense ranks 119th. That is not good facing a legit Mizzou offense that features a great QB that can really air it out.

This season Missouri is 5-3 ATS and betting on Texas Tech has been a losing proposition since they are only 2-5-1 ATS. Missouri has covered the spread in 5 of their last 6 games against Tech and they are also 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games as a road favorite of 3.5-10.

In their last games Missouri was handed their first loss of the season 31-17 to Nebraska and Texas Tech lost to Texas A&M 45-27 and is not hard to see why they lost since they gave up 449 passing yards and committed 3 turnovers.

Missouri and their 23rd ranked passing offense is led by QB Blaine Gabbert, who really struggled in the loss to Nebraska. Even though he passed for 199 yards with 1 TD he had 1 INT and only completed 18/42 of his passes and I am no math genius, ok I am, but that is not a good completion percentage.

He will be able to get back on track against a Texas Tech secondary that has given up a ton of yards this season. To have any chance to contain Gabbert the Red Raiders’ pass rush, which is legit with 20 sacks on the season, has to get to him.

While they did lose the Tigers did rush for 142 yards against Nebraska and Texas Tech does not have a good run defense and gave up 174 rushing yards last week. Basically, Tech has a bad defense and their offense will have to light up the scoreboard to pull off the home upset.

Pretty much all the pressure in this game is on Texas Tech QB Taylor Potts, who ranks 6th in the nation in passing yards per game and last week in the loss to Texas A&M passed for 227 yards with 1 TD and 0 INT. WR Lyle Leong and WR Detron Lewis are his main targets and these guys need to play well and make some big plays. Missouri’ pass defense ranks 62nd in the nation, but their pass rush has been great this season with 24 sacks and that ranks 7th in the nation.

To take some pressure off Potts the Red Raiders will have to run the ball, but their rushing offense only ranks 97th in the nation. Tech has not had a player break the 100-yard barrier this season and that trend will continue in this game. Missouri has the nation’s 50th ranked run defense, but with how their offense will rack up the yards Tech will have to air it out to keep up with them.

Missouri lost their last game, but that was to Nebraska and they will bounce back against Texas Tech. With a defense as bad as the Red Raiders there is no chance they will keep the Tigers from lighting up the scoreboard. Even though Potts will play well Mizzou will win this game and cover the 4-point spread.

The Tigers have an Over record of 8-3 in their 11 games when they are the road favorite and that trend will continue, as they are favored in this game and the total will go Over the posted total of 58.5.

Pick: Missouri -4 and the Over
