Maryland Terrapins (6-2)

The door to the ACC title is ajar and Maryland wants to kick it down. The conditions are certainly right with Miami’s top two offensive players, Jacory Harris and Damien Berry, unlikely to suit up. But can the Terrapins capitalize?

Slowly but surely, this program seems to be rounding into form. The Terps are 3-1 in ACC play and squashed Wake Forest 62-14 last week. Danny O’Brien threw four touchdown passes. Sure, it was just Wake Forest, but this kind of performance from O’Brien is starting to become a trend. He has 13 touchdown passes versus just three picks on the season and those picks all came in one game. Looking closer, O’Brien has seven touchdown passes and no interceptions over his last two games. Three of those TDs came against the tough Boston College defense.

Defensively, the Terps have been quite respectable, ranking 26th overall and cracking the top 36 in both pass and run defense. They’ve allowed no more than 31 points in a game this season and did that only twice.

Miami Hurricanes (5-3)

Last week was disastrous, then almost inspiring, then ultimately disastrous for Miami. With the game scoreless against Virginia, starting quarterback Jacory Harris suffered a concussion. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

True freshman Stephen Morris took the reins and Miami struggled at first, falling behind 24-0. But he found a groove late in the game and led three touchdown drives in the fourth quarter as the Hurricanes almost fought all the way back to win.

So the good news is that Morris showed flashes of being a future starter and may do a reasonable job holding the fort if Harris can’t play in Week 10. The bad news is that he’ll have less offensive support than he did last week. While we don’t 100 per cent know that Harris won’t play, we do know that Damien Berry won’t. Miami’s top rusher, who ranks fourth in the ACC with 690 rushing yards, is “banged up” according to coach Randy Shannon and needs time to heal up. Lamar Miller and/or Mike James will have to step up in Berry’s absence; both runners average well over five yards per carry.

The pick:

There’s a chance that Miami won’t lose a step even without Harris and Berry. Morris showed flashes of brilliance and the ’Canes have a solid stable of backup running backs. In fact, Virginia’s pass defense ranks higher than Maryland’s and Morris found a way to solve it.

That means that Miami has a chance to move the ball on Maryland this week. While O’Brien has been outstanding, he faces the nation’s seventh-ranked pass defense on the road. It’ll be tough sledding on against Miami’s athletic group.

I won’t get carried away. Miami is still banged up and, I think, won’t cover the eight points. But I do expect the Hurricanes to win outright.
