Texas Longhorns vs. Kansas State Wildcats Preview

In a Big 12 match up between a couple of teams that are really struggling the Kansas State Wildcats (5-3) host the Texas Longhorns (4-4). College football lines have Texas as 3.5-point favorites in this game with a total of 46.

Both teams could really use a win in this game to restore some confidence, which may be waning for each team. Texas has lost 4 of their last 5 games including their last 2. They are out of the rankings and have lost 3 straight home games for the first time since 1997. Turnovers have really hurt them this season and if they do not right their ship quickly they may not even play in a bowl this season.

Kansas State was ranked a few weeks back, but they have lost 3 of their last 4 games. They are in a better position to play in a bowl, as they only need one more win to become eligible and in their last 2 games they face Colorado and North Texas. They can, pretty much, ensure they will go bowling if they can beat Texas this Saturday.

Texas only has the nation’s 80th ranked rushing offense, but that stat will likely improve after this game. Why? Kansas State has the worst run defense in the nation giving up an average of almost 230 yards on the ground per game. In their last 2 games, both losses, they have given up 492 rushing yards. Their offense will have to step up since the Longhorns RB’s will run ragged in this contest.

Kansas State is 4-4 ATS this season and betting on Texas has been a bad call, as they are only 2-6 ATS. On top of that Texas has only covered the spread one time in their last 6 games against Kansas State.

In their last games Texas lost to Baylor 30-22 and Kansas State lost to Oklahoma State 24-14.

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. That is what the Longhorns have to stay away from, as that is the main reason they are a .500 team. In their 4 losses this season they have committed 13 turnovers and in the loss to Baylor last week they fumbled late in the game, which cost them a chance to win. QB Garrett Gilbert has 9 INT’s this season and only 6 TD and he will have to be careful with the ball in this game. However, he will be facing a Wildcats’ secondary that only has 6 INT’s on the season. In the 4 wins for Texas Gabbert only has 3 picks and all those came in one game. For the Longhorns it’s easy, as they have to run the ball and not turn it over and if they do that they will win this game.

Kansas State RB Daniel Thomas leads the Wildcats and their 25th ranked rushing offense and he is the key in this game. He has played well the last couple of games, even though the Wildcats lost, rushing for 113 yards against Baylor and 101 last week against Oklahoma. The passing offense of the Wildcats is only averaging 180.3 passing yards per game and QB Carson Coffman is decent, but against one of the worst pass defenses in the nation last week in Oklahoma State he passed for only 170 yards with 0 TD and 2 INT.

While Texas has had their issues this season their defense has actually played pretty well with the nation’s 2nd ranked pass defense and 28th ranked run defense. If their run D can contain Thomas they will be in good shape.

The Longhorns will run the ball a ton in this game and be very successful at it. Because of that it takes pressure off Gabbert, who will have a good game and not turn the ball over. Texas is a better team than Kansas State and they will show it in this game and they will win big having no problem covering the 3.5-point spread.

Pick: Texas -3.5
