Minnesota

Tim Brewster was sent packing a few weeks ago, but this Minnesota team just can’t find a spark. They won their first game of the season and have lost eight straight since that time. The schedule is difficult the rest of the way, so don’t be surprised if they finish 1-11.

Adam Weber has had a solid season at the quarterback spot for the Golden Gophers. He has 2,123 passing yards and 17 touchdowns this year. Da’Jon McKnight and MarQueis Gray give the team a pair of talented receivers on the outside. Eric Lair is also a dependable receiver who usually works in the slot. The Minnesota running game just hasn’t been productive enough this year. DeLeon Eskridge and Duane Bennett are solid backs, but the line just hasn’t opened many holes. Minnesota only averages 133 yards per game on the ground.

The Golden Gophers defense has been awful this year. They allow an astounding 202 yards per game on the ground each game. This unit is giving up 34.1 points per game, and they allowed 52 last weekend at home against Ohio State. The secondary is pretty decent, but the lack of a pass rush from this team is amazing. In nine games they have recorded only three sacks! Minnesota currently ranks last in the country in sacks, and the second worst mark in the nation has doubled them up with six sacks.

Michigan State

The Michigan State Spartans were enjoying a dream season until last week. Michigan State looked as if they never showed up in Iowa City. How does this team bounce back now? They are still in the Big Ten title race.

Kirk Cousins has been a great leader for this team, but last weekend his interceptions really hurt the team. Cousins threw three interceptions last weekend, and he had only 198 yards through the air. Edwin Baker and Le’Veon Bell form a terrific tandem of tailbacks for the Spartans. Baker is averaging 6.5 yards per carry this year, while Bell is averaging 6.2 yards per carry. The Spartans were only able to muster 31 yards on the ground last weekend at Iowa, but they should be able to control the line of scrimmage in this game.

The Michigan State defense is much improved this season. They are allowing only 20 points per game this year. The secondary is a little weak, but the front seven is terrific. Greg Jones and the rest of the linebackers are all over the field, and the front four hold their own nicely. This unit has done a good job forcing turnovers this year. Minnesota will probably get some yardage on this secondary, but don’t be surprised if the Spartans force some Golden Gopher turnovers.

The Pick:

The Minnesota Golden Gophers defense is horrible, and without any pass rush at all I think they’ll be unable to stop Michigan State. Minnesota will probably be able to put up some numbers through the air in this one, but it won’t be nearly enough. I think a high scoring game is coming here. I like the over.

Minnesota vs. Michigan State Score Prediction: Michigan State 45 Minnesota 20
