Illinois
Very few people, including myself, expected the Fighting Illini to be as good as they are this year. Ron Zook’s team has been a surprise largely because of their impressive defense. If they win this game they’ll be bowl eligible.
The Illinois offense relies on the running game quite heavily. Mikel LeShoure is the primary runner, and he already has 789 rushing yards this season. Nathan Scheelhaase is the freshman quarterback for Illinois, and he also is a good runner. With these two in the backfield Illinois always has more than one guy who can beat you with his legs. Scheelhaase is still making mistakes in the passing game, but he has shown quite a bit of promise. In the last two games he has thrown for six touchdowns and no interceptions. If he continues to improve quickly, this offense will be dangerous in the next couple years. 
The Fighting Illini defense has been outstanding this season. This group was expected to be no better than mediocre, but they are one of the best defenses in the Big Ten. It all starts with the great play of the defensive line, led by Cory Liuget. Liuget looks the part of a future NFL star, and he has been brilliant this season. Martez Wilson is back and healthy as well, and he has a nose for the football. This unit is allowing only 16.8 points per game this year.
Michigan
Michigan has now lost three straight games after starting the season 5-0. They are following the same script they did last year. If this team wants to make serious progress this is the game where they must stop their slide.
The offensive unit has been great all year. Denard Robinson cooled off slightly after his ridiculously amazing start, but he has had a great year. Robinson is completing 65% of his passes this year. He is certainly a runner first, and that has led to an astounding 1,287 yards on the ground already this year. The Wolverines rank fourth in the nation in total offense. Roundtree, Stonum, Hemingway, and Odoms give this team four very solid wide receivers. The one knock on this offense is that they often seem to turn it over or make mental mistakes in key situations.
The Michigan defense has been terrible all year, and they are really holding this team back. This unit is allowing 440 yards per game, which ranks 106th in the nation. They are giving up 291 yards per game through the air. Michigan has had three safeties go down with season ending injuries, but it is still surprising that they are this bad against the pass. In order to stop Illinois they must stuff the run first, then pressure Scheelhaase and force some turnovers from the young quarterback.
The Pick:
The Fighting Illini are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games. Michigan is 0-4 ATS in their last four games against teams with a winning record. I think Illinois has a decent shot at the victory here, and with three points I’ll take the underdog.
