No. 7 Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Iowa State Cyclones Preview

Nebraska (7-1) is in first place in the Big 12 North along with Missouri, who they beat last week, and they head to Ames, Iowa this Saturday to face a Iowa State (5-4) squad that upset them last season. College football lines have Nebraska as big 18-point favorites with a total of 58.

Iowa State is 0-16 in Big 12 games against top 10 opponents since the inception the conference.

Nebraska has not lost a Big 12 road game since the 2008 season.

Last season the Cyclones beat the Huskers in Nebraska forcing 8 turnovers and winning 9-7. Don’t look for a massive upset for the 2nd year in a row, as Nebraska has the nation’s 6th ranked rushing offense and Iowa State only ranks 99th in run defense. Since losing to Texas a few weeks back Nebraska has won their last 2 games handing both Oklahoma State and Missouri their first loss of the season.

If the Huskers win their last 4 games they will represent the Big 12 North in the conference championship game. There is a very good chance of that happening since they do not face any more ranked teams this season.

Iowa State has won 2 in a row, but this is far from a good match up for them, as in the teams they have faced this season that can run the ball the Cyclones have lost and have given up a ton of yards on the ground. They have a decent offense, but if the Huskers’ offense plays like it has the last couple of weeks Iowa State will be going home a .500 team.

Against the 3 ranked opponents the Cyclones have played this season they have given up an average of 581.3 yards per game, including 279.6 rushing yards per game, and have been outscored 155 to 34.

In their last games Nebraska racked up 454 yards of offense in their 31-17 win over Missouri and Iowa State looked pretty good on defense in their 28-26 win over a struggling Kansas team.

This season Nebraska is 4-3-1 ATS and Iowa State is 4-5 ATS. The Huskers have covered the spread in their last 4 road games and Iowa State is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games as a home underdog.

The Huskers are all, well mostly, about the run, as their passing offense only ranks 102nd in the nation. Why pass the ball when you have weapons like QB Taylor Martinez and RB Roy Helu Jr.? In the win over Missouri last week Helu Jr. had a career game becoming the first player this season in the FBS to rush for over 300 yards.

Martinez injured his ankle in the Missouri win and did not finish the game, but he recently returned to practice and will go in this game. Still, he may be hobbled a bit and the Cyclones have to key on Helu Jr. The Cyclones run defense gave up 119 yards to Kansas, but the Jayhawks have nowhere near the ground game that the Huskers have and that is a BIG problem for Iowa State.

Last week against Kansas Iowa State’s offense started off slow only scoring one TD in the first half. However, in the 3rd quarter they scored 21 points to secure the win. Their offense is not a high scoring one and they will need a good game from QB Austen Arnaud and RB Alexander Robinson. Robinson is the key in this game and last week he rushed for over 100 yards for the 2nd week in a row. Nebraska only ranks 75th in the nation in run defense, but their pass defense ranks 3rd in the nation.

Iowa State has allowed 20 sacks this season and a big key for the Cyclones in this game is their offensive line that has to protect Arnaud and open up holes for Robinson.

Iowa State simply cannot stop the run and the Huskers will kill them on the ground this Saturday. Nebraska will easily win this game and cover the 18-point spread, as they move one game closer to the Big 12 title game.

Pick: Nebraska -18
