Virginia Cavaliers (4-4)

Virginia is riding a high this week after two straight wins, including a 24-19 shocker over the Miami Hurricanes last week. But could the Cavaliers be smoke and mirrors? First off, they entered that game 0-3 in conference play and allowing 37 points on average in those three losses. Secondly, they knocked out Miami quarterback Jacory Harris with the game still scoreless. They flew out to a 24-0 lead but held on as the Hurricanes surged back to score 19 unanswered points.

Virginia isn’t particularly good at anything – 40th in passing, 73rd in rushing, 110th in run defense – except for stopping the pass. The Cavaliers allow 178.4 passing yards per game, good for 18th in the country. That could bode well against a pass-first team like Duke. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Duke Blue Devils (2-6)

It’s been a rocky season for Duke but the Blue Devils are at least feeling good after scraping out a victory against Navy last week. They, too started out with a 24-0 lead and they, too almost blew it but Duke held on for a 34-31 win.

The Blue Devils don’t win a lot but at least they make things interesting most of the time. Sean Renfree makes a ton of mistakes under center but it isn’t afraid to chuck it up and hope for the best. He averages 256.34 passing yards per game and has 15 interceptions to go along with his 11 touchdown passes.

Renfree has done a better job protecting the ball of late. He has one interception in his last two games. He was especially impressive against Navy last week, throwing for 314 yards and a score, completing 93.3 per cent of his passes and running for two more touchdowns.

The pick:

You might think that Renfree only excelled last week because he faced a weak defense, but that’s not really true. Navy ranks 31st against the pass, allowing 191.5 yards per game. The Midshipmen are almost as good as Virginia at defending the pass. For that reason, I think Renfree can at least come close to duplicating last week’s effort at home in Week 10. Pick Duke and expect a naillbiter.
