Northwestern

Pat Fitzgerald has done a tremendous job with this Northwestern Wildcat football program over the last few years. The Wildcats have gone to two straight bowls and they are trying to set a school record by making the post season three years in a row. Some key players graduated and this will be a transition year for Northwestern, but Fitzgerald definitely has this group believing they can win.

Mike Kafka, who led the offense so brilliantly in 2009, graduated and now Northwestern must find a new signal caller. Dan Persa looks like the man who will take over the job in 2010. Persa is fairly mobile and appears to be learning the offense quickly, but he definitely won’t provide the same type of big arm for this offense. The offensive line is completely intact from a year ago and they should be improved.

The defense took some big hits when it lost its top cover corner in Sherrick McManis and both safeties from last year. The Wildcats defense looks decent up front, but the secondary will likely make them extremely vulnerable against teams with a solid passing attack.

Vanderbilt

Things are just not going well for the Vanderbilt football program at all right now. Bobby Johnson resigned as Head Coach just a few weeks before the season got underway. Robbie Caldwell is now the coach of the Commodores and he definitely has his work cut out for him.

The Vanderbilt offense is one of the very worst in the entire country. College Football

The team hasn’t been able to throw the football at all in recent years, and injuries to both Zac Stacy and Warren Norman have raised questions about their previously average running game. The team needs Larry Smith or Jordan Rodgers to step up and provide a big spark from the quarterback position. The offensive line replaces four starters from last year, so that could be a big problem. This team averaged 9 points per game in the SEC last year and I just don’t see improvement in this year’s team.

The Commodores defense is significantly better than their offense, but they do have some weaknesses as well. On the plus side, they have a very solid group of linebackers. Chris Marve is all over the field and is one of the most underrated linebackers in the game. The secondary is talented and they will hold their own.

The defensive line isn’t as good as most SEC defensive lines, and that could pose a problem against teams who can run the ball well.

Wildcats at Commodores College Football Gambling Trends

Northwestern is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games
The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Vanderbilt’s last 8 games
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Vanderbilt’s last 5 games at home
The total has gone UNDER in 10 of Northwestern’s last 12 games on the road
Vanderbilt is 0-5 SU in its last 5 games
Vanderbilt is 0-5 ATS in its last 5 games at home

The Pick:

The Northwestern Wildcats have some questions surrounding their team, but not nearly as many as the Commodores do. I generally don’t like playing road favorites too often, but I think this Northwestern team could win six or seven games and Vanderbilt will probably struggle to win more than one or two games.

The free pick here is on Northwestern -4.5.
