Arkansas State had high hopes for their 2009 season, but they fall flat on their face with a very disappointing 4-8 record. Steve Roberts and his Red Wolves will go into Jordan-Hare Stadium as a massive underdog in this season opener, and deservedly so.

Arkansas State had a veteran team last year, but this year they replace just about every single skill position player on offense. Corey Leonard had been a solid starting quarterback for four years, but now the Red Wolves have to groom a new starter. Either Ryan Aplin or Phillip Butterfield will start, but they just don’t have experience needed to mount a consistent passing attack on the road against a team like Auburn. The running backs are also inexperienced, but Arkansas State does have one of the best offensive lines in the Sun Belt.

The defense is certainly the stronger unit for the Red Wolves. They lost quite a bit of talent from the defensive line, but they should still be a solid unit. All three linebackers are very skilled, and DeMario Davis is a star.

The secondary is decent by Sun Belt standards, though they will likely struggle with this high-powered Auburn offense.

Auburn

The Tigers showed that they could make some serious noise in 2009 under new coach Gene Chizik. The offense was one of the most exciting in the nation, and expectations are for this team to continue to build on the momentum they started last season. College Football

Ben Tate is gone from the offense, which would be a big concern for most teams, but Mario Fannin is a terrific back and should be a great player for the Tigers in 2010. Fannin can break it at any point, and he is a great pass catcher out of the backfield. The Tigers are loaded at the wide receiver spot, with both Darvin Adams and Terrell Zachery back to shine once again.

The offensive line is solid, with four quality starters returning.

There is just one question mark, which is the play of new quarterback Cameron Newton.

Newton has the skills to be a good quarterback, but you have to wonder if it will take some time to get acquainted with Gus Malzahn’s system.

The Auburn defense is not nearly as solid as their offense. The Tigers defense is surprisingly short on the depth chart at some key positions. The linebackers are high quality with Josh Bynes and Craig Stevens leading the way, but the secondary is very short on depth.

The safety positions are big unknowns, and those who were supposed to be the leaders for this job are dinged up quite a bit. A shaky secondary won’t hurt Auburn much at all against the Red Wolves, but it definitely will in the SEC.

If the Tigers defense can slowly catch up to the offense then this is a team that could surprise on a national level this year.

Red Wolves at Tigers College Football Gambling Trends

The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Arkansas State’s last 8 games
Arkansas State is 3-8 SU in its last 11 games
Arkansas State is 1-7 SU in its last 8 games on the road
Auburn is 7-2 SU in its last 9 games at home
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Arkansas State’s last 5 games on the road

The Pick:

I know Auburn’s defense isn’t good, but I’m really not sure if Arkansas State can score much at all on them.

The Red Wolves look to be incredibly weak on offense this year. Auburn could rack up the points in huge bundles here, but I hate laying 31 points on a team that isn’t even ranked in the top 25. I’ll take the under here even though it worries me a bit with Auburn’s offense.

I think 58 is just a little too high.

Arkansas State vs. Auburn Score Prediction: Auburn 45 Arkansas State 10
