The Pittsburgh Panthers open their 2010 NCAA football season this Thursday night September 2 when they travel to Salt Lake City Utah to play the Utes in a Big East- Mountain West show down.

Coming off a 2009 campaign where it compiled an overall record of 10-3 and a Big East conference record of 5-2, Pittsburgh is primed to make a run not only at a conference title, but to put itself in the middle of the BCS picture as well.

Before the Panthers get too far ahead of themselves, they will have to get by a Utah team that has been a force in the MWC over the past several seasons. Last year the Utes also finished with an overall record of 10-3 and were 6-2 in conference play.

The Panther’s offense will revolve around RB Dion Lewis. In 2009 as a freshman he rushed for 1,799 yards on 325 carries for an amazing average of 5.53 yards per carry. College Football

He also led the team in TD’s with 18. Against a completely rebuilt Utah defense that is only returning four starters from last year’s team and gave up an average of 138 yards on the ground, Lewis is set up to have a huge night in Salt Lake City.

At QB for Pittsburgh will be Tino Suseri, who is taking over for last year’s starter Bill Stull. Suseri should not be asked to do much more than hand the ball off 30-35 times to Lewis against the Utes, but he does have a few capable receivers when he does take to the air. Last year’s leading receiver, Jon Baldwin is back and will be paired with Shanahan to provide two huge targets down the field.

Utah’s offensive attack will be led by QB Jordan Wynn. In limited action last season, playing behind Terrance Cain, Wynn threw for 1,329 yards on 104 completions and had eight TD passes. The Utes also have a potent rushing offense led by Eddie Wide and Matt Asiata. In 2009, these two combined for 1,399 yards on 277 carries and scored 16 TD’s.

While Wide was the primary work horse of the pair, look for Asia to get quite a few carries as well to try and keep Pitt’s front seven a bit off balance.

Playing at home will certainly be an advantage for Utah as they were a perfect 6-0 last year at Rice Eccles Stadium, but the Utes are stepping way up in class in this game. Pittsburgh is a solid team on both sides of the ball. It has the ability to wear a defense down by grinding it out on the ground and is excellent at controlling the line of scrimmage and winning the battle of field position.

Utah keeps it close, but the Panthers pull away in the end.
