The Syracuse Orange open their 2010 season on the road against the Akron Zips in a Big East- Mid American Conference tilt with both teams looking to erase the memory of a disappointing 2009 season.
Last year, Syracuse lost a 23-20 OT heartbreaker to Minnesota on opening day, then stumbled to a 4-8 record overall. Akron took on Penn State in its opener and kept things respectable in a 31-7 defeat. The Zips finished the year 3-9 overall.
These two teams have faced each other the past two seasons with the Akron pulling off a 42-28 upset victory on the road as a 4 ½ point underdog in 2008. Last year the Orange came away with a 28-14 win in Syracuse as an 11 ½ point favorite.
The Orange offense is now in the hands of QB Ryan Nassib, who takes over for the departed Greg Paulus. Nassib only attempted 68 passes last season, completing 36 of them for 422 yards. WR Alec Lemon and TE Nick Provo should be the primary targets in the passing game and RB’s Antwon Bailey and Averin Collier will be the primary ball carriers in the ground game.
The strength of this team will be on the defensive side of the ball. It will be led by LB’s Derrell Smith and Doug Hogue who are two of the best in the Big East. DB’s Mike Holmes and Max Suter return in the secondary, but as a whole this group needs to do a better job against giving up the big play.
Akron’s new offensive coordinator John Latina will look to go back to a traditional offense that features a balance between pass and run. QB Patrick Nicely will be the starter but they also have Matt Rodgers to turn to if needed. Broderick Alexander leads a solid group of running backs and WR Jeremy LaFrance will be the go to guy in the air.
The defensive front four will be anchored by DT Almondo Sewell and DE Hasan Hazime. LB’s Brain Wagner and Mike Thomas round out a solid front seven for the Zips.
Syracuse is 4-6 against the spread in its last 10 games with its only win as a favorite coming against this very team. Against the ‘over’ line the Orange is 4-6 in their last 10. Akron is 2-8 ATS in its last 10 and 2-6 as an underdog. Against the ‘over’ line the Zips are 5-5, including going 3-1 in their last four games.
While Syracuse has improved since last season, it will still struggle to be competitive this season against the better teams in the Big East this year. That being said, the Orange should have no problem getting by Akron in their opener as their defense should be able to completely shut the Zips down.
